After his incredible run in the MCU as Iron Man, Downey Jr. is now a favorite In the awards circuit for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The actor has been winning awards left and right, including at the recent SAG Awards.
The actor won Best Supporting Actor at the at the event. He has won the category in other major award ceremonies including the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the Critics Choice Awards. These consecutive wins have made him the candidate most likely to win The Oscars next month.
Robert Downey Jr’s Consecutive Wins Is Bad News for Mark Ruffalo and Ryan Gosling
Robert Downey Jr’s incredible performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was an amazing return to character-driven roles after a successful decade of playing a superhero in the MCU. His tour de force performance as Lewis Straus in Oppenheimer has blown everyone away and has led to him winning every major acting award held in the past month.
Downey Jr. has already won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, and most recently, a SAG award for his performance in the film (via Discussing Film). He has overshadowed all his fellow nominees including Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo and won consecutively in every award ceremony. Gosling and Ruffalo’s chances of winning the Oscar are now very unlikely.
Ruffalo and Gosling have also been the talk of the town for their performances in Poor Things and Barbie respectively. The two actors were pushed off of their comfort zones and played against type characters which they played very well. Despite Downey Jr. sweeping all the awards, their performances are still recognized and celebrated.
The Oscars are next month and Downey Jr. is now most likely to nab the award for Best Supporting Actor. His consecutive wins against all his fellow nominees have made him the prime candidate for the award. There is a small chance that the Oscars may surprise audiences but for now, it is a done deal that Downey Jr. is locked for the award.
Christopher Nolan Praises Robert Downey Jr’s Generosity and Openness
Christopher Nolan brought Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer to play Lewis Strauss, the antagonistic figure to Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer. The director has always been wanting to work with the actor as he has been a big fan for so many years. In an interview with the New York Times, Nolan revealed how he was initially afraid to approach the actor for the role.
Nolan further opened up about how he was enamored with Downey Jr’s talent and his generosity despite being a big movie star. He praised him for his openness to listen to others and for including everybody to bring in their creative vision for the film. He said,
“I already knew that Robert was great, and if we could just get him in that room, he would kill, and he did. But I also learned that the source of that greatness is his generosity. He listens, and he considers everybody around him creatively.”
