Ever since the reveal of the PlayStation 5 Standard and Digital Editions, fans have been speculating if and when the PS5 Slim will release. But with new information on the horizon, it seems that three years after its original release, the PlayStation 5 will be getting a new Slim model. And it’s not even too far off.
Sony has previously released Slim models for almost all of their consoles, starting with the PlayStation 2 Slim in 2004. Since then, they’ve released the PS3 Slim and Super Slim, as well as the PlayStation 4 Slim. These models were much cheaper and more accessible than their original counterparts. Considering how massive the PlayStation 5 is, a PS5 Slim is sorely needed.

PS5 Slim May Be Revealed at Showcase
Recent reports have hinted at the PS5 Slim releasing in September. Co-Founder of XboxEra, Shpeshal Nick, said in a Tweet that he has heard of plans to reveal the PlayStation 5 Slim in August.
I had heard a little while back that there would most likely be an August show for PlayStation and the plan was to reveal the Slim there. Maybe they’re going earlier to combat the Xbox/ABK news?

Previously, there have also been reports that Sony may be planning a second PlayStation Showcase for this year. Taking the above-mentioned Tweet and the possibility of a second PlayStation Showcase into account, it’s possible that the PS5 Slim will in fact be revealed at this second Showcase. The Showcase in May left fans divided. Some were onboard the hype train of the second phase of the PS5, while others were left wanting for more. Nevertheless, a reveal like this would definitely get people excited about the future of the PS5.
Other Evidence Pointing Towards the PS5 Slim Release
With the recent FTC Trial where Microsoft was to buy Activision Blizzard, they revealed in a document to the FTC that Sony plans to release a PS5 Slim in the Fall of this year. According to Microsoft, the console will be priced at $399.99, which also happens to be the same price as the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
Insider Gaming reported last year that the PS5 Slim will also come with a detachable disc drive, which is something completely new for the PlayStation Series of Consoles. According to the owner of Insider Gaming, Tom Henderson, there aren’t any major hardware changes from the original edition. He’s also mentioned that the Detachable Disc Drive will not be compatible with the Digital Edition.
A small update here:
– Doesn’t seem like there are any major hardware changes from the original console.
– Disc Drive likely won’t be compatible with the current digital version— Tom Henderson (@_Tom_Henderson_) January 13, 2023
An extra USB-C port on the back of the PS5 Slim will reportedly be used to attach the detachable disc drive. The console may be sold on its own or bundled together with the disc drive. It seems that the main purpose of this external disc drive is to give customers the choice of whether or not they want disc compatibility with their console. According to reports, the PlayStation 5 Slim is set to release in September 2023.
