With a diverse resume including romantic dramas The Notebook, La La Land, Drive, The Gray Man, Lars and the Real Girl, The Believer, and many more, it would be hard to believe that Ryan Gosling never played a superhero character in the MCU or DCU. The same goes for The Office star Steve Carell.

Both Gosling and Carell didn’t become superheroes in the traditional sense, like the characters in MCU or the DCEU, despite being known as the most recognizable stars in the industry.

But do you know they were involved in a project that almost brought a superhero story to life, which is unrelated to the MCU or DCEU? This project was The Unbelievables a 1999 nearly-lost television movie (and quasi-pilot).

In a conversation in Interview Magazine, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell talked about the film they did long ago. During the conversation, Gosling said, “A lot of people don’t know this, but you and I did a pilot for a television series back in the day. When was it—’98 or ’99?” Carell gushed, “Yeah, it had to be.”

Gosling remarked that the plot was “The Unbelievables, which was very similar to the Pixar movie The Incredibles [2004]. It was about a family of superheroes.”

No doubt, all the Ryan Gosling fans are eager to see him as a superhero. But they forget this almost-forgotten TV movie called The Unbelievables, where he starred as a superhero. It was a 23-minute pilot based on a group of retired everyday heroes.

In this movie, written and directed by Ed Solomon, Gosling played the character of Josh, and Carell played the character of Hershel.

We know Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell did some movies together, including Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and The Big Short (2015). There is also one of their movies that is not much remembered, which is The Unbelievables (1999).

Gosling compared his 1999 TV movie with 2004’s The Incredibles  an animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2004 because its stories were similar and focused on a family of superheroes.

This animated film became Pixar’s hit. A few years before, The Unbelievables also tried its hand at the superhero genre but didn’t quite hit the mark. At the same time, The Incredibles reimagined the genre, which is why it is still remembered as one of the greatest superhero series till now.
