Carell is highly recognized for his role as Michael Scott in the NBC sitcom, The Office. In an interview with Collider, Steve Carell gave an insight into behind-the-scenes of the 2011 movie, Crazy, Stupid, Love. Starring alongside Ryan Gosling, he talked about a sequence where his character, Cal Weaver got slapped by the latter’s character, Jacob Palmer which happened to continue almost all day on set.

However, he clarified that he wanted a real slap instead of a staged one, which seemingly would bring out the real emotions behind the whole sequence.

Referring to the slap, The Office actor shared,

“Yeah, he improvised that. One take he said, “Can I slap you?” and I said, oh yeah, definitely, but you really have to hit me, don’t do a stage slap.

He continued to share that the whole moment was ‘funny’ to him. Explaining the reason, Carell mentioned,

“Oh yeah, he kept hitting me. It was funny, cause he says I have an extremely loud head when I get hit. Apparently, there’s something in my bone structure that really resonates and echoes and yeah, he did that over and over and over. It was pretty funny, it became a running gag.”

Their funny moment had pretty good takes before they eventually settled on the one featured in the movie. Another interesting fact about the project is Gosling’s great chemistry with his co-star, Emma Stone with many believing that it could have been a result of their genuine love in real life.

“They’re so much fun to work with, willing to try anything. They both like to laugh, so that’s a great plus when you’re doing a comedy, but they’re not outside the characters because they’re serious actors.”
