In the modern landscape of Hollywood, the trend of reviving or reintroducing iconic characters or franchises has been the norm lately, and for excellent reasons, such as the fans and audience that come with it by default. The return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the 2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the shining examples of how familiar faces can take a film project to the next level in terms of commercial success.

But with that familiar sense of thrill and enjoyment, there was a longing for these stars to formally return to the big screen as their iconic web-slinging characters. While we may not have news regarding Garfield’s return, Maguire’s co-star from the original Spider-Man trilogy, Thomas Haden Church, reveals that he and Sam Raimi might return for a fourth film in the beloved series.

Just when we thought that the tale of Tobey Maguire as the original and the iconic Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi might inevitably end, fans saw him swinging with his successors in the 2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Watching him and Andrew Garfield alongside Tom Holland was such a nostalgia trip for the fandom that they consequently demanded that the original series by Sony be revived for another project.

And now, it seems like that dream might soon become reality, after Thomas Haden Church, who played the role of Sandman in the original series as well as in the last MCU Spider-Man film, revealed that there is a chance The Great Gatsby star along with Raimi will be making the heavily-requested fourth film of the series, which he might also be a part of. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Church opened up about this, saying:

“But Sandman, there’s been some rumors that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I’d do it tomorrow, you know, they’ve never asked me to show up in another movie, another Marvel film. But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire], and that’s the one that …They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spiderman 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I’m getting a little old.”

Thus, if Sony wants to revive its sinking Spider-Verse franchise, then this might be the most compelling and right opportunity.

Why Is Sony’s Spider-Man Trilogy So Iconic?

One of the main reasons why fans rally behind Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy so much is because, at its core, it was one of the finest examples of excellent comic book adaptations in cinema history.

The representation of Peter Parker and Spider-Man by Maguire and the relative nature of his portrayal was by far the biggest draw for the audience to this film. Along with that, the groundbreaking visual effects used in this film were class-leading for those times, and in the end, the entire execution of these attributes in a beloved film series was enough to make this trilogy an icon in the industry.
