However, in September 2011, when Mendes and Gosling began their relationship, he shared with The Times UK that he considered Sandra Bullock and Rachel McAdams to be two of the greatest girlfriends he’d ever had. Gosling told The Times (via US Magazine):
“I had two of the greatest girlfriend of all time. I haven’t met anybody who could top them.”
Further, the Blue Valentine actor also laid blame on Hollywood for being the reason why both relationships didn’t work out. He explained that the show business aspect took priority in the relationships, hindering the potential for any other aspects to grow. Gosling added:
“Showbusiness is the bad guy. When both people are in show business it’s too much showbusiness. It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow.”
Notably, Gosling’s relationship with McAdams became highly publicized, especially because they didn’t see eye to eye when they first met.
