The results of the Screen Actors Guild Awards are here, and it’s very surprising that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, one of the biggest films of last year, did not take home any wins.

Margot Robbie was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, but she lost to Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone. The same goes with Ryan Gosling, who received a nod for the male category in a supporting role but he was defeated by Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr.

Margot Robbie And Ryan Gosling Still Have No Luck

The SAG Awards is not the first time Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the Barbie movie were snubbed. The previously-concluded Golden Globe Awards also chose Poor Things’ Emma Stone over the Australian star for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture.

Gosling was nominated for the Supporting Actor category, and Globes favored Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. Even Greta Gerwig, who helmed Barbie, lost the Best Director win to Christopher Nolan.

In consolation, the film won two accolades: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s ‘What Was I Made For?

Now, with the upcoming Oscars event, one of the most esteemed award-giving bodies in Hollywood, the fate of Barbie lies in the power of its eight nominations. Unfortunately, Robbie and Gerwig did not make it on the list to the dismay of fans. Only Gosling and America Ferrera received nods for Supporting Roles.

Robbie addressed her Oscars snub at a SAG-AFTRA panel in Los Angeles via Deadline:

There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. It’s been an incredible year for all the films… Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the Best Picture nod.”

The 33-year-old producer said that people’s reaction towards the movie was the most rewarding part of this experience. For her, the cultural impact of the film is more precious than any prestigious awards.

Gosling, on the other hand, expressed disappointment over Robbie’s Oscars snub. He feels “extremely honored” for the nomination, but without Barbie, there is no Ken.

The continuous snub of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling yielded speculations among fans that only those films viewed as intellectual or complex are more deserving of awards than those that looked easy on the eyes.

An article from BBC claimed that even though Barbie received a Best Picture nod, “Oscar voters refused to take the toy-based film seriously, ignoring how inventive it is, dismissing it as a billion-dollar popcorn movie.”

America Ferrera once told Variety that “people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy” after Robbie and Gerwig were left out of the Oscars list. The trend of award-giving bodies particularly ignoring Barbie and its lead stars already tells a lot about their preferences.

It remains to be seen how Barbie and the team will fare at the Oscars event, though fans are hoping this time, they will finally receive a win.

Barbie is now available to watch on Max.
