There have been several updates in Sea of Thieves since its launch, keeping the players engaged and wanting more. The developer has also brought something new to the game with each update and is finally adding private servers after over five years of endless requests from the community. The private servers are called Safer Seas and are coming into the game as part of Season 10.

Season 10 kicked off on October 19, 2023, after the end of the seven-month-long Season 9, which brought new Pirate Legend Voyages, new rewards, several QoL updates, and more. Season 10 added new features and was said to introduce more with future updates each month, essentially everything planned for 2023, including private servers, which will allow a safer experience for players as they get ready for the PvP experience in Sea of Thieves, now called High Seas.

Rare said that the new private server mode called Safer Seas will be added in December, describing it as complimentary to the shared game world to enjoy with friends or immerse in the world of Sea of Thieves. In the Season 10 preview update, Sea of Thieves Creative Director Mike Chapman stated:

Safer Seas is a new way of playing and enjoying Sea of Thieves. It allows you to play alone or with up to three chosen friends in a private world in Sea of Thieves. What’s really important to stress is that the game that Sea of Thieves represents today, all of that shared world magic of the game that continues to be the primary way of playing the game.

But the adventure mode in Sea of Thieves will now give you two distinct options, High Seas, the game as it is today, but also Safer Seas, that new way to play and enjoy the game.

Safer Seas will allow players to enjoy PvE content, but it won’t be as rewarding and full of features as the existing world, High Seas. There will be restrictions on a lot of things that players have access to in High Seas. Chapman further added:

We see Safer Seas as very much a complementary way of enjoying Sea of Thieves, a new way to enjoy the game with your friends or to immerse yourself in the world. Safer Seas won’t evolve separately with its own unique features, it just provides that new window into experiencing Sea of Thieves for the first time.

So, when we think about the specifics of what progression means in Safer Seas, as I mentioned earlier, we want this to be a way to learn about the game, learn about the systems, and how to progress in the game.

Players will be able to earn progression in certain Trading Companies, but it is capped at 30% of what players earn in High Seas. The developer has also limited Trading Company progression to 40, meaning that players won’t be able to reach Pirate Legend status.

Players will be unable to earn gold or reputation for Athena’s Fortune or Reaper’s Bones. The newly introduced Guilds feature, Hourglass Factions, and live-service events such as Gold & Glory will only be available in High Seas. Moreover, players won’t be able to use their customized ships in Safer Seas.

The private server is called Safer Seas and will have several restrictions.

Season 10 October 2023 update introduced Guilds in Sea of Thieves that allow players with Captain status and a ship to create a guild and choose a name, logo, and emblem for it. Players can add up to 24 of their friends or enemies to their guilds.

The November update added a new competitive voyage called The Skull of the Siren Song, where players were tasked with finding treasure in a server-wide race, pitting them against each other. Lastly, the private servers are all set to arrive this month after years of waiting and fan requests.
