Call of Duty is a franchise known for being only a shadow of what it once was. Also, one doesn’t need to look too far to find players expressing their grievances with the title, from matchmaking issues to cheating troubles. Despite that, one thing the title gets right is releasing new content regularly.
New content in the game is rolled out in the form of Seasons and Season 3, the latest one launched recently. By the numbers alone, it seems that fans are gravitating to the game, and the new Season passes as the game is topping Steam charts in the United States regarding revenue.
Call of Duty Season 3: Blackwell proves to be a crowd-puller
As stated earlier, the game and its season pass are topping the charts on Steam. The title and its Season Pass were placed at number 1 and number 2, respectively, on the Top Sellers Steam Chart in the United States Region.
This happening might surprise many readers as the general sentiment regarding the game on social media and among the isn’t very positive. Some people were even convinced that the game was nearing its demise due to the developers not fixing critical problems such as the Squad-based matchmaking and cheating issues with the title.
Like the fan above, many people even question the series’ essence and the state it has come to after the developers focused on multiplayer game modes but cannot do that correctly. Another fan was visibly unsatisfied with the game’s quality and wrote:
But the numbers still stand, so the game isn’t doing poorly in sales. While it is unknown if the title recovered its juggernaut of a budget, the active player numbers speak for themselves and can be found here.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 shows that its developers choose quantity over quality
Since the game came out, it has received an enormous amount of flak from industry professionals, gamers, and various fraternity members, which has been genuine. Concerns like players abusing in-game mechanics and being able to cheat easily in Ranked and competitive game modes are just the tip of the iceberg.
Not just this, the developers also claimed that Modern Warfare 2 (2022) would be supported for two years before allegedly abandoning the plan and releasing another premium CoD title, which was supposed to be a DLC instead:
But this strategy works because players buy the game. Regardless of the complaints, it might continue as the franchise generates revenue. But the elephant in the room is that Call of Duty isn’t known for creating quality experiences anymore.
The next Call of Duty game is supposed to go back to the Black Ops universe, and it is reported that Treyarch is working on it. However, nothing is confirmed yet, and the game hasn’t been announced yet. What do you think of the current state of Call of Duty? Is there any hope for the franchise to return to how it once was?
