Marvel’s Phase 5 of the MCU is underway in earnest and the first television series in this chapter will be Secret Invasion, comprised of 6 episodes. Based on an event in Marvel comics, the series will follow the director of S.H.I.E.L.D Nick Fury who attempts to make sense of an alien invasion by extraterrestrial shapeshifters known as The Skrulls who have been infiltrating earth for years without humanity knowing of their existence.
The Skrulls were first seen in 2019’s Captain Marvel when Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel made it her mission to help the reptilian humanoids get back to their planet after the damage done by Kree. But with Secret Invasion’s trailer pointing to The Skrulls still inhabiting Earth, the Marvel fandom is now questioning the purpose of Captain Marvel’s concerted effort at rehabilitating the aliens.
“Why Are The Skrulls Still On Earth”? Ask Fans
Apart from waging a war of revenge against Kree who was instrumental in her mental manipulation, the other big purpose of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel was to join forces with The Skrulls and Nick Fury to annihilate their common enemy. At the end of the film, with the aliens’ planet Skrullos destroyed by Kree, Captain Marvel’s mission included leaving Earth to find a new home for the shapeshifters while also looking for the other missing members of their community.
But with Captain Marvel’s disappearance from Earth and the Skrulls still inhabiting the planet as hinted in Secret Invasion, fans are now asking “ Why are the Skrulls still on Earth?” The bigger query though, that is making the rounds, is the futility of Captain Marvel’s ambitious mission to seek asylum for the Skrulls.
Brie Larson’s Online Image Affected Captain Marvel
While many fans have looked at the positives and are eager to see their doubts about The Skrulls answered, some cynics have questioned the purpose of Captain Marvel, calling it a pointless exercise by the MCU. These comments are also significant in the context of the backlash that Brie Larson has received on social media over the years. The star has infamously attracted online hate and has been a constant target for expressing her opinions bluntly in public.
The Room actor was also heavily criticized for her portrayal of the Marvel superhero with a certain section of fans using sexist undertones to describe her physicality and others dismissing her performance as flat and lackluster. This, along with her alleged off-screen behavior, has resulted in netizens taking a judgmental outlook towards the whole Captain Marvel franchise, including unwarranted criticisms towards the upcoming The Marvels.
Secret Invasion Hopes to Answer Some Burning Questions
All eyes will now be on Secret Invasion to see if the series can shed light on the many burning questions that fans have regarding the presence of The Skrulls on Earth. One of the theories making the rounds is that the show will take inspiration from the Secret Invasion comic book storyline involving extraterrestrials. According to the narrative in the comics, the Skrull Empire, led by Princess Veranke, infiltrated Earth to transform it into their new home after the annihilation of the Skrull planet by Kree. This though would again imply that Captain Marvel’s mission to rehabilitate the aliens did not materialize, leading to a possible hostility between the superhero and the Skrulls.
