Matthew Vaughn is a brilliant director. Having helmed projects like Kingsman and X-Men: First Class, his recent Argylle starring Henry Cavill will be hitting the screens soon. However, before Zack Snyder could have made Man of Steel, it was Vaughn who went ahead to pitch a Superman movie to the studio, which unfortunately never took off.
While he went on to direct other non-superhero movies, Vaughn may have just opened up a potential new door for him by pitching himself as a director for the recently announced Supergirl: World of Tomorrow. Not only did he make his interest known, but the director also seems to lock heads with James Gunn over the project’s casting even though it still doesn’t have a director.
Matthew Vaughn Locks Heads With James Gunn Over DC Casting
Matthew Vaughn is an incredible director, but he is also a self-proclaimed Superman Nut. Having wanted to direct his own Superman movie in the past, he recently talked about DC’s newest project, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, while appearing on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast.
Recently, The Wrap and Deadline both confirmed that James Gunn has found his Supergirl in the House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock for Supergirl: World of Tomorrow and other DC projects, including a potential appearance in Superman: Legacy. While the actress’ casting has generated a significant buzz, Vaughn had another bone to pick with DC head Gunn.
While on the Post Credit Podcast, he remarked that although he is a huge fan of Alcock, he finds it weird that Gunn cast her without a director being attached to the project.
“I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie —the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”
While it is true that often it is the directors who cast, Supergirl is vital to the whole DC universe and not just the project, hence, it made sense that it was Gunn and Peter Safran who cast Alcock.
Matthew Vaughn Open To Directing Supergirl: World of Tomorrow
While Matthew Vaughn may have issues with the casting directions and the film’s development process, he is a big fan of the House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock. Having wanted to work with her in the past, the director thinks Alcock is a fabulous actress.
So, while Vaughn expressed his interest in the actress, he was inevitably asked if he would be willing to direct the film while on the podcast. He stated,
“I was asked about doing ‘The Flash’ way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing … so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”
As we wait for further announcements regarding the film and its potential director, The Wrap reports the film will be based on the comic book of the same name, which was released last year.
Superman: Legacy will premiere on July 11, 2025, while Supergirl: World of Tomorrow details are yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Vaughn’s Argylle will release on February 2, 2024.
