Everyone cheered at that glorious scene in Avengers: Endgame (2019), and one of those delighted viewers was Captain America himself, Chris Evans. When Steve Rogers attempted to lift the Mjölnir in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), even Thor held his breath.

Chris Evans Recalls Captain America’s Greatest Scene In Avengers: Endgame

Speaking with Empire for their World’s Greatest Cinema Moments Ever issue, Chris Evans recalled attending the Avengers: Endgame premiere along with the audience. He wanted to see the fruit of his labor the same way the public would, and it was a good decision. Evans said:

The first time I saw Endgame was at the premiere. Normally, I see the films I work on well in advance, and I rarely sit through premieres (too much anxiety), but being the last installment of a 10-year journey, I wanted to experience this final film the same way the audience would. When Cap lifts Mjölnir, our theater went absolutely berserk. Even though I knew the moment was coming, I still got emotional.”

Indeed, everyone cheered, applauded, and even cried at that scene. Until today, it remains one of the most unforgettable undertakings of Captain America. He did not only prove himself worthy, but he also made every Marvel fan’s dream come true.

After the release of the film, people were still reeling from the hype, and Evans had seen audiences’ reactions from different theaters on social media. He continued:

In the following weeks, friends and family would send me clips from theaters around the world losing their collective s—t at this moment. Seeing those reactions and knowing that I was lucky enough to be a part of those memories for those people made me feel a sense of pride and gratitude that I’ll never be able to properly express.”

When Evans witnessed that scene again on the big screen, he wasn’t an actor anymore; he was a fan completely enthralled by the power of cinema. The Knives Out actor further added:

In those moments, I’m not an actor or even an adult; I’m a little kid again, completely captivated by the power and magic that movies can wield. Damn it… I’m getting choked up.”

It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and there was no better way to end the epic saga. After all, fans had been waiting for that moment since 2015.

It has been four years since Avengers: Endgame rocked the global theaters, but fans are still terribly sad that Chris Evans has now left his stint as Captain America in the past. The actor confirmed his exit from the franchise during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show (via Comic Book):

Yeah, I think it’s done. I mean, it was a great run, and we went out on such a high note. What are the chances to have a character span that long a time, with that much of a web of stories land on its feet in the final chapter? To go out on that note, it would be risky to revisit, in my opinion… And it was such a good experience, I think it’s better to be left that way.”

Evans reflected on his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and admitted that Endgame was very special to him. He confessed feeling like he was “living in a memory” and just trying to appreciate what a ride it has been.
