The Elden Ring community has had a field day since its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC was first announced last year. Likewise, players have often been proposing theories that would explain the events that took place in the main storyline and the ones that are going to happen in the coming extension, with one speculation even predicting how Messmer the Impaler is not the villain the players think he is.

Not much is yet known about who the snake and flame-wielding NPC really is, but everything will finally be revealed to players when the DLC comes out on 21st June, next month, and it might just bring the answer to how Queen Marika is related to the new character.

Messmer the Impaler – Friend or Foe?

The official gameplay trailer for the DLC was released after much waiting on the 21st of February, giving us an insight into what exactly Hidetaka Miyazaki, the renowned director of Elden Ring and other Soulsborne games has in store for the players. The said trailer gave us a look at many new weapons, areas, and even enemies, but someone that managed to stand out the most was none other than Messmer the Impaler.

From the looks of it, the flame-wielding boss feels like a significant character and someone that the player would have to fight against, potentially at the very end of the DLC. However, as theorized by this user on Reddit, he might not be the bad guy everyone believes him to be. According to the post, it was Queen Marika who was in a union with none other than Dragonlord Placidusax, her third secret husband, and ultimately gave birth to Melina and Messmer.

The speculation further dives into how Messmer helped Marika by helping her get rid of the Fire Giants and other similar enemies that would have proved to be an obstacle to her leadership. Following these events, the theory predicts Messmer fell into the void of guilt and realized how his mother, Marika, was up to no good, causing him to use the very flame he used to get rid of the giants to set ablaze the Erdtree.

Consequences Of Messmer’s Actions And How It Relates to Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree

Through the storyline that the players have experienced for themselves in the main game, many would know how it does not end well for those who dare defy the Golden Order, with the Fire Giants being a showcase example of this. Following the Erdtree being possibly set ablaze by Messmer the Impaler, the afore-mentioned user believes how he was banished back to the Land of Shadow, which was covered by a concealing vail so Marika would not be reminded of her son and the past.

It is only at the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC that the players will get the answers to all the mysteries that have been left open-ended since the main game, and the ones that have been introduced in the before mentioned trailer of the extension.

Elden Ring is available to purchase on Steam.
