With the debut of Jonathan Majors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kang the Conqueror was intended to become the center of Phase 5 and Phase 6. However, his personal life has led him to get kicked out from the franchise with many wondering about the future of the time-traveling antagonist. However, a theory indicates that Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings can bring an MCU villain that is cosmic enough to replace the former’s character.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced the audience to the titular character, who is forced to confront his past when his father, Wenwu (previous owner of the Ten Rings) brings the former and his sister, Xialing to search for a mythical village. However, this movie could also sort of major Kang issue the franchise is currently dealing with.

Shang-Chi’s ten rings possess great powers however the movie has already revealed that the technology was not something they knew. According to a Reddit theory, Eternals might share a strong connection with the rings. When the current leader of Earth’s Eternals, Sersi found out about the identity of their society, Phastos constructed several rings for the Eternals to channel their power in it. It was also meant to bond them however they did it without the rings. Returning to Simu Liu’s MCU movie, Wenwu discovers the rings that gave him immense power and longevity that helped him create his empire. This led the Redditor to hint that the ten rings are one of the products created by Eternals.

“Ten Rings came from a failed rebellion attempt by the Eternals against the Celestials several millennia earlier. While not explicitly said, it is quite possible that Eternals had a similar moment of revelation of their true purpose and chose to fight against it. I believe that is was during this conflict, that Phastos (or another engineering Eternal) actually made a set of ten rings for the Eternals to fight back.”

The user also commented on how it ended up in Wenwu’s hands.

“However, they ultimately fail, the planet they are trying to protect is destroyed, their memories are wiped, and the rings are cast into deep space to drift for eternity. Except they didn’t. They just so happened to land on a small backwater planet called Earth where they were found by Wenwu who was able to access the power and immortality of the Eternals.”

This makes things interesting. Given that the rings can have a unique connection with Eternals, there are chances that a celestial can be introduced which would play a huge role in shaping the future MCU. As devoted fans know, celestials are far more cosmic than Kang the Conqueror, making them a great replacement for the time-traveling antagonist. However, there is another scene that makes this theory further interesting.

In the end-credits scene of the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wong, Bruce Banner, and Captain Marvel assembled to investigate a mysterious signal the rings emitted across the entire Multiverse, which was detected by the magic-users of Kamar-Taj. It happened the moment Shang-Chi took possession of the Ten Rings. With Wong possessing magical knowledge, Bruce Banner having scientific knowledge and Captain Marvel being an expert in outer space, the trio tried to pinpoint the location to which the rings sent the signal but it was futile. This led to many fans connecting the beacon with Jonathan Majors‘ Kang the Conqueror, whose technological knowledge is far from the current MCU phase. However, with the above Reddit theory, it is likely possible that the rings might be sending the beacon to a powerful celestial which might be unveiled in the future.
