Since the beginning of One Piece, Shanks has posed as a wise mentor to Luffy, motivating him to achieve his dream of being a pirate. However, there is a strong possibility that all of this was a sham and he actually was planning all this for his own goals.

According to a theory posted by Ohara on YouTube, Shanks has been laying a web of deception to lure in Luffy and finally kill him to take his Devil Fruit. This Devil Fruit would ultimately help him in finding or activating the One Piece treasure and help Shanks achieve his goal for which he has been waiting for a long time.
It has been made clear in the One Piece story that Luffy’s Nika Fruit is needed for the final phase of the One Piece treasure hunt. Also, as it probably belongs from the Ancient Kingdom, it will likely respond to Luffy’s drums of liberation. Thus, Shanks has been waiting all along for Luffy to unlock his Nika mode so that he can finally claim One Piece.
While Shanks’s goal might be the One Piece treasure, it is still unclear whether he is pursuing it as a spy for the World Government or just to fulfill his former Captain’s dreams. Either way, he might have to kill Luffy to take control of his Devil Fruit, which would make him the most evil antagonist in One Piece.
