Famous for her vibrant red hair, Emma Stone’s actual natural hair color is blonde. The Academy Award-winning actress initially started her career with her natural hair tone but has become most identifiable with her red locks since the early 2000s. Stone’s decision to dye her hair for the role of Jules in Superbad, the influential comedy that marked her rise in Hollywood, was a pivotal moment that led to her signature red hair.

As their careers were just starting to take shape, Stone eventually established a more extensive and diverse filmography compared to Martha MacIsaac. During that period, MacIsaac had secured supporting roles in several TV movies, while Stone had made appearances on popular shows like Malcolm in the Middle and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

Producer’s Unusual Request To Emma Stone

Because both actresses were relatively lesser-known at the time, the production crew expressed concern that if they maintained similar hair colors, the audience might struggle to differentiate between them. Judd Apatow, who has often pointed fingers at Tom Cruise for his religious beliefs also happened to be the celebrated producer of Superbad, revealed the behind-the-scenes insights in an interview with Vanity Fair.

“There was a concern that [Stone] had the same color hair as Martha MacIsaac’s. And I said, “Well, maybe it could be like red or something.” So we dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before. And since then, she has cursed me because now people love her with red hair and she’s had to live with that for a lot of her adult life.”

So, while it’s clear why the production team had the idea for Emma Stone to change her hair color, what motivated the actress to take that extra step for the role?

Emma Stone Faced Many Rejections in Her Career

Even with an Academy Award under her belt now, Emma Stone’s early career was marked by numerous rejections. Despite auditioning multiple times for casting director Allison Jones, she struggled to secure the roles she was vying for. However, a turning point came when Jones reached out to Stone, inviting her to audition alongside Jonah Hill.

“I feel like it’s a real testament to the power of casting directors and all of these auditions that you think are failed auditions,” the actress recalled. “Sometimes someone remembers you, and asks you to come in for something and changes your whole life.”

Emma Stone’s decision to dye her hair for Superbad stemmed from her recognition of the remarkable opportunity to collaborate with the creative team behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Despite solidifying her position as a talented actress, Stone’s dedication to her roles remains unwavering, a commitment she demonstrates by fully immersing herself in each character and even maintaining her signature red hair throughout the years.

Superbad is available for rent or purchase on Google Play.
