Portrayed by the late actor Alan Rickman, Severus Snape has been one of the most integral parts of the Harry Potter franchise. The actor has received immense praise for his performance in the fantasy adventure film series and fans still can’t imagine another actor taking on the role of the Potions Master. Surprisingly, the studio looked at Tim Roth as the potential candidate for the role initially.
While he refused to play the part, The Incredible Hulk actor later acknowledged that the Emmy winner was perfect for the role as he revealed whether he regretted turning down the opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest franchises in cinematic history.
Tim Roth Claimed Alan Rickman Was Perfect Actor to Play Severus Snape
After Tim Roth rejected the offer to star in Harry Potter, the role of Severus Snape went to Alan Rickman, the actor who had reportedly been J. K. Rowling’s first choice for the part. Following the 2001 film, Harry Potter grew to become one of the biggest movie franchises.
However, when asked during an AMA session on Reddit if he regrets rejecting the opportunity to star in the franchise, he said, “Regarding Snape- Alan took it and ran with it, and that was that.” He shared that his take on the character would have been very different.
Roth also claimed that everything would have changed if he had played the role, but he still doesn’t have any regrets about turning down the offer. “It would have been nice to have a 7-year gig that’s a nice and comforting space to be in. But no, I think the better man for the job did the job,” he said.
Roth, known for portraying Emil Blonsky, aka Abomination, in The Incredible Hulk and later in She-Hulk, has shared that he was all set to star in the franchise before he stepped back from taking the role of the Potions Master, Severus Snape.

Tim Roth Was Ready to Star in the Harry Potter Franchise
After rejecting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Tim Roth went on to star in Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes as General Thade. However, he shared that he was going to do both films, and his schedule was also figured out accordingly.
“I was going to do both films. We rigged it so that I could fly back and forth. They figured out the schedule,” he shared, as per MTV. He also said that his kids were very excited for him to take the role of Snape, as they loved the books.
However, he soon got overwhelmed by the possibility of how this character could impact him as an actor and decided to step back. “It just got to be overwhelming in my mind,” he said before adding, “But the idea of being an ape with Tim was too good.” He has also shared that he did not want to be known for playing a single character and chose to star in Planet of the Apes instead.
