Ralph Fiennes’ sister Martha Fiennes talked about their mother who got Fiennes into the world of theater and acting. Revealing some dark secrets, Martha Fiennes revealed that their mother suffered from incurable hysteria and the siblings had often found themselves in dangerous situations.
Ralph Fiennes’ Mother Had Incurable Hysteria
Portraying the role of Amon Goeth in Schindler’s List and Count Laszlo de Almasy in The English Patient, Ralph Fiennes established himself as a highly serious actor in Hollywood. Known for portraying the role of Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and onwards, Fiennes made his way towards modern movies.
He was born in a home where he was one of seven children with a father who was a farmer-turned-photographer and a mother who was a writer and a painter, Fiennes had a pretty artistic childhood. Recalling the days, Martha Fiennes, sister to Ralph Fiennes told The Guardian (via El Pais) that their mother struggled quite a lot.
“My mother often showed a great level of distress. She had been diagnosed with incurable hysteria — she had an unpredictable side. It was terrifying. She screamed, broke dishes, threatened to kill us all.”
Martha Fiennes noted that her brother too had an unpredictable side. Observing and directing her brother in two movies, Martha Fiennes revealed that her brother found beauty in tragedy.

Having a knack for portraying villainous roles, Fiennes’ sister Martha Fiennes may have answered why her brother chooses villains. In the interview, Martha Fiennes revealed that her brother has a knack for finding beauty in a tragedy.
“I think Ralph has a dark side. He has an innate understanding… a very true understanding of human nature. He understands anguish and sadness. [He knows that] there’s always a strange beauty in tragedy.”
