In what was probably one of the better movies in the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was riddled with unexpected cameos by quite a few Hollywood A-listers. The movie showed many all-time fan-favorite Marvel characters from parallel timelines of the MCU.
One such character was that of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter (also known as Agent Carter), the lady love of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers (also known as Captain America), playing the First Avenger herself, from a parallel timeline. As it turns out, Atwell was quite unhappy with how things turned out for her character’s cameo in the film, and fans had their fair share of things to say about her reaction.
The premise of the Multiverse of Madness
In the film, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) travel across the multiverse to stop Wanda Maximoff from taking over the multiverse. Strange and Chavez first meet on Earth-616, where they are attacked by Gargantos, a tentacled monster. They defeat Gargantos and learn that Chavez has the power to travel through the multiverse. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who is also known as the Scarlet Witch, is obsessed with finding her children, Billy and Tommy. She believes that she can reunite with them if she takes over the multiverse. Maximoff uses the Darkhold, a powerful book of magic, to track down Chavez. She attacks Kamar-Taj, the headquarters of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, and kills several sorcerers.
Strange and Chavez escape to Earth-838, where they meet the Illuminati, a group of superheroes who have banded together to protect the multiverse. The Illuminati, which consists of Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Captain Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Blackagar Boltagon (Anson Mount), Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch), Reed Richards (John Krasinski), and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart)—believe that Strange is a threat to the multiverse, but they eventually decide to help him stop Maximoff. Unfortunately, they are all killed by the Scarlet Witch, except for Mordo.
It is here, Captain Peggy Carter says the iconic Captain America line, “I can do this all day”, before being sliced in half by the very shield that she wields, controlled by Maximoff.
Maximoff is ultimately defeated, and the Darkhold is destroyed. However, the film ends with Strange meeting Clea, a sorceress from the Dark Dimension, who warns him that he has caused an incursion.
Atwell’s thoughts about her cameo in the film
Hayley Atwell wasn’t too pleased with the way her character was finished off in the movie.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she said,
“I’m like, ‘That wasn’t my choice!’” “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently you can’t, so, egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
Marvel fans were not pleased with Atwell’s comments, to say the least. Twitterati went into a frenzy and had the following to say:

Can actors not be happy about how the character they played got written ? Even if she accepted the role it doesn’t mean she agrees with the fate of the character creatively. She could’ve been passionate about captain carter and just wanted to accept the chance to play her .
