Not a lot of stars decide to leave a successful franchise mid-way unless their character gets killed off. However, that is exactly what happened when Emily Blunt decided not to reprise her role as Kate Macer in the action thriller movie, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The movie was the sequel to Sicario which first came back in 2015 and was instantly a massive critical and commercial success.
Although there have been no major updates about the release date of the 3rd movie of the franchise, a source recently revealed that the filming for Sicario: Capos would be starting soon enough and Denis Villeneuve would assume his position as the director of the movie once again.
Denis Villeneuve is allegedly returning to Sicario
Denis Villeneuve who directed the first Sicario movie was absent from filming its sequel as he had scheduling issues because of Arrival and Blade Runner which were released in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Due to the absence of Villeneuve at the helm, the movie suffered a bit and was not as much of a success as the first movie. However, a source recently revealed that Denis Villeneuve is allegedly indeed returning for Sicario: Capos.
According to Secrets of Dune, “Denis Villeneuve will be in New Mexico around the rumored shooting date.” The source further talked about the pre-production of the movie and revealed that a shooting date is set as well to start the filming of the movie. The source said,
“Pre-production has already been underway but was pushed back due to the labor strike. Now, it has a shooting date of February 8th, 2024, but it’s not listed anywhere, and most of the world doesn’t even know that there is a complete script or that it has been green-lit. One reason not many know about the project is due to the labor strikes, keeping the circle on the project very small.”
A few months ago, the producers of Sicario, Molly Smith, and Trent Luckinbill even talked about how they would like to reunite the original trio of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro in the next movie.
Emily Blunt might be back in Sicario: Capos
The producers of Sicario, Molly Smith, and Trent Luckinbill appeared for an interview with Collider and talked about the scripting of the next movie and how they are not at all rushing it as they believe the 3rd movie might wrap up the franchise for good. Luckinbell also revealed that they are aiming to get the original trio of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro back for this movie and said,
“Working with Taylor [Sheridan, who wrote previous two movies], we always sort of envisioned this, at least sort of at a minimum, a three-part thing. But yeah, our idea is to get the cast back together with Benicio [Del Toro], Emily [Blunt], and Josh [Brolin], and we’ve got a great story to tell…We have a script we’re reworking right now, but we’re getting very close. We feel very confident we’re going to crack it.”
Since the filming of the movie has not even started, a release date for Sicario: Capos has not been decided yet as well. Sicario is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Sicario: Day of the Soldado is currently streaming on Hulu.
