Simu Liu’s Marvel debut was one of the most anticipated ones, since the movie, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the first one to be helmed by an Asian hero. Shocking everyone, the movie turned out to be one of the best MCU movies ever to be made largely because of the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton.

Since then, fans of the director have been looking forward to having him on board for Shang Chi 2 and other Marvel flicks, especially when superhero movies have been performing so dreadfully. And much to the delight of fans in a new interview, the Barbie star confirmed that Cretton will be helming the sequel.

Like the majority of other people in the public eye with even a tablespoon of fame and a truckload of talent, Destin Daniel Cretton too had very humble beginnings. Half Japanese by descent, the filmmaker-screenwriter was born and raised in Haiku, Hawaii (see The Maui News). After moving to California, the filmmaker has had a hell of a ride, for not only did he make his splendid feature debut with I am not a Hipster (see BuzzFeed) but he also quickly became a favorite of Marvel fans.

With him helming a major project like Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, fans were understandably curious how the project would do, especially since it was the first time a Marvel movie starred an Asian, Simu Liu, as the protagonist (via Deadline). And in no small measure to his efforts, Cretton’s direction has since made the movie one of the highest-ranked Marvel movies (via Rotten Tomatoes).

And in a new interview with ComicBook, Liu remarked,

“Destin is such a special filmmaker and we’re very happy to have him on the sequel. So, he’ll be working on that and we’re really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he’s going to do a brilliant job.”

Thus confirming what many fans were desperate to hear, Cretton helming Shang Chi 2 is a piece of big news. Fans welcomed the news and expressed their hope for the upcoming movie.

Marvel has long remained tight-lipped about the sequel to Shang Chi and how it will connect to the rest of the MCU. While we do not know which cast members will be returning for the sequel or what storyline it will be based upon, we do know that Destin Daniel Cretton will be back in the director’s chair for the sequel.

With Marvel seeming to be undergoing a restructuring now, it will be worth waiting to see which direction they will take Shang Chi 2, and how it will end up connecting to the rest of the movies, especially with Avengers 5 6.

While Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings can be streamed on Disney +, there is no update as of now regarding its sequel.
