Ever since the first success of the first Joker made headlines and broke the internet, fans of comic book films and of the titular character have been asking filmmaker Todd Phillips for updates on the second film in the series, which is titled Joker: Folie á Deux.
And just recently, fans got a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming film as the first trailer just dropped, and people are labeling it as a musical sequel to the original.
Phillips knew that this was going to happen, which is why he claimed several times about how the film would follow the original narrative style from the first film, and that the musical element would just be part of the audience experience. But even after this claim was made publically, fans aren’t convinced of this.
Todd Phillips Claims The Upcoming Joker: Folie á Deux Is Not Completely A Musical
During the reign of the DCEU at Warner Bros, when every film seemed formulaic and by the book with little to no artistic expression in them, filmmaker Todd Phillips went ahead and created Joker, which oozed passion and creative intellect. Since the film was a noir-esque project with a gritty narrative, everyone expected the next film in the series to follow the same style.
But with the release of the first trailer of the upcoming Joker: Folie á Deux featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, we can see that there is a sizeable emphasis on the music aspect of the project, which has led to it being labeled as a full-blown musical sequel to the original.
However, according to The Hangover director himself, the film is not a complete musical, but a hefty part of it is created with an emphasis on music and the core environment builder of the film, while the core part of the movie will still follow the original narrative style. Talking about it at CinemaCon (via The Hollywood Reporter), Phillips said:
“We never talked about it like that. I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element. To me that doesn’t veer to far from the first film. Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.”
Despite the filmmaker himself clarifying this particular piece of evidence, fans still aren’t convinced and believe that it is a musical through and through.
What Do The Fans Have To Say About This?
While Phillips’ claims might be saying one thing, the trailer of the upcoming Joker: Folie á Deux paints another picture entirely, where we can also witness Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. Thus, fans are calling this film a musical in every sense of the word.

I hate musicals but loved the first one so I’ll give it a go but my expectations couldn’t be lower

While fans aren’t ready to accept it’s not a complete musical, if the film is as good as the first one was, even they say they won’t mind even if it was a musical.
