A surreal comedy about a company’s game-changing product is a description that can be used to describe both Unfrosted and Barbie. The former marks the directorial debut of comedian Jerry Seinfeld while the latter is one of the biggest commercial hits of 2023. As a result, Unfrosted should have borrowed some elements from Barbie, at least on paper.
However, according to Jerry Seinfeld, he cautiously steered away from the blueprint set by Barbie, to make his film different. Seinfeld’s words have seemingly come back to haunt him, as fans are criticizing his remark about Barbie, in light of the recent poor critical reception of Unfrosted. Here is what fans are saying about Seinfeld’s Barbie remark on social media.
Jerry Seinfeld Talks Wanting to Make Unfrosted Different From Barbie
Jerry Seinfeld makes his directorial debut with Unfrosted, a comedy film about cereal company Kellogg’s attempts to make a revolutionary breakfast product. While promoting the film, Seinfeld discussed his approach to the real story behind the making of Pop-Tarts, during an appearance at SiriusXM town hall.
“We really wanted to be the opposite of Barbie. We wanted to be, Kellogg’s would not make this to promote their product.”
Seinfeld made the above statement (via The Wrap) regarding his desire to make the film with almost little to no similarities with Barbie. Seinfeld added that the team avoided mentioning the brand’s name in the film to avoid any legal issues.
Seinfeld could have been referring to the aspect of Unfrosted, where the real company is not mentioned, unlike Barbie. However, Seinfeld’s comments also suggested a tonal difference from the $1.4 billion grossing film, alongside Seinfeld’s own brand of comedy which differs from the humor in Barbie.
Fans Rip Apart Jerry Seinfeld’s Barbie Remark After Poor Reviews of Unfrosted
After Seinfeld’s comments about wanting to differentiate his film from Barbie made their way online, fans of the latter were unhappy with the comedian. Moreover, with Seinfeld’s directorial debut scoring poorly among critics and fans alike, Barbie fans did not refrain from criticizing Seinfeld’s remark against the film.

As the tweets indicate, fans did not take kindly to Seinfeld’s Barbie remark. Moreover, some fans recontextualized his comments and interpreted them to imply that, unlike Barbie, Seinfeld set out to make a commercially unsuccessful and unlikeable film. Ultimately, Seinfeld was openly mocked on social media, particularly because of Unfrosted‘s poor critical performance when compared to Barbie‘s global critical acclaim.
