Hollywood star Cillian Murphy has portrayed a diverse array of characters on-screen, including his acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning biographical thriller Oppenheimer. While Murphy received widespread praise for his role, particular attention was drawn to a sensual nude scene in the film. However, this was not the actor’s first experience with nude scenes.
Murphy previously filmed a nude scene for his breakout role in 28 Days Later. Despite his openness in discussing his scenes in Oppenheimer and even arguing against its criticism, Danny Boyle has revealed that Murphy had reservations about filming the naked scene in the 2002 horror sci-fi film.
Cillian Murphy Was Concerned About Naked Scene in 28 Days Later
While discussing his nude scenes in Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy admitted that filming such scenes is “the most awkward” part of the job. However, he also shared that it was something that was necessary in portraying the emotional relationship between his character and Jean Tatlock.
“Listen, no one likes doing them, they’re the most awkward possible part of our job,” he told GQ in an interview before adding, “But sometimes you have to get on with it.” However, Murphy’s approach to nude scenes hasn’t always been the same.
The 2002 film 28 Days Later features Murphy waking up naked in a hospital bed. And the director of the film, Danny Boyle, has shared that the Peaky Blinders star was very uncomfortable with filming the scene.
According to the filmmaker, the Oscar-winning actor was “very worried about doing these scenes naked,” as per SlashFilm. Boyle acknowledged that it could be hard for some actors and he took strict protocols during the filming to ensure Murphy’s comfort.
He ensured that the sequence was filmed on a closed set and imposed strict rules about not making any jokes that might discomfort the actor. Starring Murphy alongside Naomi Harris and Brendon Gleeson, the film was a commercial and critical hit. The makers are working on another sequel for the sci-fi horror film.
Danny Boyle And Alex Garland Are Working on a Sequel to 28 Days Later
Earlier this year, reports have revealed that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are reuniting for a sequel to the 2002 film 28 Days Later. While a sequel titled 28 Weeks Later, helmed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and featuring a new cast, has already been released in 2007, it did not include Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim.
Boyle and Garland are reportedly planning to start a new trilogy with the sequel, 28 Years Later. The Yesterday director is set to direct the first installment in the potential trilogy and Alex Garland would write all three, with each film having an estimated budget of $75 million.
Murphy’s involvement with the film remains uncertain. However, the actor has shared that he would love to be involved in the sequel. “I’ve always said I would love to be involved,” he said in an interview with Variety. He also expressed excitement about reuniting with the original team for the new project.
28 Weeks Later is available on Prime Video.
