If you have ever felt like a bad child to your parents, you can probably look back and at the very least say you never spent their entire life savings on video games. However, that will not be the case for one 16-year-old boy when he looks back on his life years from now. A recent viral video posted by @Dexerto on Twitter, shows a young teenager being beaten by his parents in a gaming cafe because of such a mistake.
The parents can be seen screaming at him, hitting him with what appears to be a keyboard, and pulling him up by his legs. Others who are also using the cafe, can be seen laughing at the unfolding events. The two parents continuously attack their son throughout the clip and are relentless in their beating.
According to reports, the son spends $45k of the parent’s life savings on video games, which is what led to the physical altercation. The video which was added on Twitter, is only 47 seconds long and was posted on July 8. Since that time, it has garnered 21.5 million views, nearly 6,500 retweets and 103.2 thousand likes.
What This Video Says About Human Ethics and Gaming
While for many, this clip is nothing more than a laughable situation too ridiculous to be relatable for the average gamer, it can teach a few valuable lessons. Firstly, if real, the scenario that plays out in this video has no winning side. It appears most of the commenters on Twitter discussing this attack want to choose the son’s side or the parent’s side. However, the truth of the matter is both parties were in the wrong.
The 16-year-old never should have spent $45,000 without his parents knowledge and consent. Since the money was apparently their life savings he might have cost them future retirements as well as financial security. His actions likely put them in an emotional state where they were fearful they would not be able to provide for him or themselves.

On the other side, a parent should never beat their child, which was their response to the teenager’s actions. This was not only an assault in its basic definition, but something that could possibly have a psychological impact on the him, for the rest of his life. He was not only publicly shamed, but was placed in a position where he can never trust his parents to not physically abuse him in the future. Violence is never the answer, and these parents were not good role models of this truth.
The wrongs that occurred in this video are just part of what can be taken away from this incident. Another lesson here is that it is sometimes important to take a step back. If you ever feel like a video game, or some other medium is becoming an addiction or financial burden, you should seek help. In-game purchases have become much more monetized, making youth supervision even more important, due to the ease of spending.
Even for adults, there should be consideration before reaching for the wallet. So, for mental health purposes, gamers should always make self-assessments when it comes to time, money, emotion spent on gaming. Before you end up in a bad situation, like the teenager in this video, find guidance and get ahead of the problem.
