God of War and Marvel’s Spiderman are two of the biggest PlayStation-exclusive franchises and have a massive community. The latest games in the series, God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 have been a major success with amazing reception from fans and critics alike.
Players are now waiting for sequels of the games and Sony has announced the release window for sequels of both these titles and it will surely upset the fans. The new games in the franchise will only be dropping after the company’s next fiscal year.
God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man Sequels Aren’t Coming This Year
This news comes via SIE head Hiroki Totoki during a financial call where he said that new games in the God of War and Spider-Man franchise will not be coming in the next fiscal year. He said that the titles are under development but there are no plans to release them in the next fiscal year which is between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
This means that no big first-party games will be landing on PlayStation 5 this year and that includes a Ghost of Tsushima sequel as well as a Horizon sequel. The games released this year will only be new first-party games from new IPs and possibly remakes of other exclusive titles. Totoki stated:
Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games. But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year.
This is a huge blow for players anticipating another God of War release as well as players hoping to get the Spider-Man sequel so the fans waiting to hear about the Spider-Man 3 release date need to wait more, at least till March 2025.
There have been no announcements about the sequels and when they might be coming but as Totoki said the titles are in development. Moreover, there are chances that the games are planned to be PlayStation 6 exclusives.
Only New First-Party IPs Will Be Coming to PS5 in 2024
Although Sony has ruled out new games in the major franchises, it has planned new first-party games in new IPs such as Haven Studios’ Fairgame$ which is described as “a fresh, modern take on the heist genre”, Firewalk Studios’ Concord which is PvP multiplayer shooter, and several others.
Additionally, Totoki said that the company aims to focus on live-service games so there might be a few next fiscal year. The release of remakes also cannot be ruled out as Sony has recently released The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered and other remakes could be coming as well.
There are already some titles slated to release for PlayStation 5 such as Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth which is launching later this month, and others. The Silent Hill 2 Remake is also speculated to be released sometime this year.
