SUMMARY

  • A recent theory about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania suggest Kang had actually stranded Paul Rudd's Scott Lang in the Quantum Realm or an alternate reality.
  • Evidence to back this up included Lang's concerned look at the end of the movie and there being a general feeling of something being "off."

The fourth Spider-Man movie doesn’t yet have a release date or a title, but it’s in development and confirmed to be happening. The sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has much to live up to, as its predecessor spectacularly reintroduced Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to superhero movie fans and received universal acclaim.

Spider-Man 4 will need some serious star power, and ComicBookMovie.com reports that it could come from Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man.

The report suggests a studio insider, Daniel Richtman, is claiming Cox will have a significant role in the current draft of the film and that Marvel Studios is looking for another existing MCU star to step into the role of Peter Parker’s mentor played by Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark in previous installments.

Who Will Mentor Peter Parker In Spider-Man 4?

It’s believed that one character said to be in contention for that mentor role is Rudd’s Scott Lang, AKA Ant-Man. If that’s the case, it debunks a recent theory about the character’s fate in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The theory suggested that, at Quantumania’s climax, when Scott Lang appears to be back in his reality, he’s either still stuck in the Quantum Realm or was returned to a different reality than the one he’s originally from, with Jonathan Majors’ Kang having done something to prevent him returning home.

Several factors triggered the theory, including Hank Pym witnessing distortions in reality, Lang’s questioning of whether or not he and his allies defeated Kang, an abundance of green and purple in the final scenes suggesting Kang’s looming presence, and a barista correctly addressing him as Ant-Man and charging him for coffee when he’d previously misidentified him as Spider-Man and given him coffee for free.

It all pointed towards something being “off,” but if Lang is going to appear prominently in Spider-Man 4, then it’s likely that all is well, and he’s back in the primary MCU reality safe and sound.

The idea of Lang as a potential mentor to Spider-Man is intriguing. While he’s undoubtedly achieved a lot in the MCU – he played a significant part in saving the universe, for one – he’s not particularly wise or a super-genius like Tony Stark. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of influence he has on the iconic Webbed Wonder.

Lang and Parker fought alongside each other in the Battle of Earth in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame but haven’t interacted much elsewhere. They’re both quick-witted, so their dialogue should be great, meaning it’s undoubtedly something to look forward to for MCU fans, assuming it happens.

As for Daredevil, he’s been a regular ally of Spidey’s in Marvel’s comic books for years. Charlie Cox appeared in No Way Home alongside Holland’s Peter Parker, foreshadowing their potential team-up in Spider-Man 4. That’s something every comic book fan worldwide should be excited about.

When Is Spider-Man 4 Likely To Be Released?

As mentioned above, there’s no confirmed date for Spider-Man 4 – it doesn’t even have a proper title yet – but filming should start no later than the end of 2024.

There are rumors that Jon Watts is directing again, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal producing it, so it’s in good hands. Should filming begin when expected, the movie should hit theaters worldwide no later than late 2026.
