Mixing a classic with another classic can sometimes be a strong mix or a flat reception upon release, but getting in while the getting is good is something that can be considered a welcomed inclusion, with Street Fighter 6 well off the ground and running Capcom have announced a collaboration with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Coming straight off the back of EVO 2023 Capcom had some cool surprises for those in attendance and also two brand new trailers showing a brand-new character drop and also the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collaboration coming straight alongside the new film TMNT: Mutant Mayhem.

Although the collaboration is very cool and you can get your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fix in the form of official skins, costumes, emotes and battle hub avatars some could say this is a potential missed opportunity for Capcom to have included one of the 4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a possible playable character.

Considering the rich background surrounding the characters and their numerous films and animated adventures even one character taken from this series could have spawned a brawler in a half-shell.

Street Fighter is better known for its human vs human battles with special abilities, so the inclusion of the mutants and otherworldly characters is better suited for Mortal Kombat or Injustice where they have been present. However, with characters like Blanka being an in-game character and a product of mutation whilst also being a core character from the earliest street fighter shows they are willing to change it up where possible. The fact they are ninjas does seem like more could have been done here to strengthen their inclusion.

To show everything on offer, Capcom dropped a trailer showing all of the items and features available on the 8th of August (Tomorrow) whilst also dropping a second trailer showing the newest fighter being added to the roster named A.K.I. This new fighter utilises poison as her main form of attack, in the trailer we see her explaining her knowledge and the methods of how these poisons affect the body within time, she will be available as a playable character in autumn 2023.

No price has yet been set for the additional add-on but with the newest film still fresh in cinemas just as this announcement drops it would be cool to see if Capcom decided to put some more of the heroic characters into the roster such as Splinter or April O’Neil or the villainous Shredder, Be-bop and Rocksteady and to see them making a costumed appearance at some point in the near future.

Who knows, this may not be the last time we see the turtles pop up in Street Fighter 6, the heroes and rogue’s gallery in the series is extremely strong with contenders to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Ryu / Ken / Chun-Li and Zangief. Considering their current popularity with the latest TMNT: Mutant Mayhem smashing the box office and being met with favourable reviews from both veterans of the series and new audiences this may be the start of a beautiful collaboration.

What are your thoughts/feelings on this collaboration? Did you want the TMNT gang to be introduced as playable characters rather than skins and accessories over existing pre-made? As always let us know in the comments.
