The Mad Men actor Jon Hamm, in an interview with Elle in 2012, made a not-so-controversial comment on the quality of television content available back then. The actor called 2000s icons like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian stupid, leading one to assume that these divas would be desensitized to that word, considering the amount of time they had been called that by the media and Hollywood A-listers.

However, while Hilton brushed it off without a second thought, Kardashian took offense, prompting Hamm to clarify and dig deep into his comment.

Jon Hamm Called Kim Kardashian Stupid!

In 2012, Hollywood heartthrob Jon Hamm discussed pop culture, media, and the entertainment preferences of the youth at that time. During an interview with Elle UK, the actor shared his perspective, expressing his confusion at the phenomenon that led massive crowds to obsess over personalities such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

Hamm found it puzzling that these individuals, famous for their roles in certain TV and reality programs, created what he considered dull and mind-numbing content, which was something that millions gravitated toward.

“Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated,–Being a f—ing idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly…. It’s celebrated. It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Later, Hamm felt compelled to elaborate on his statement as it stirred up a tabloid frenzy, eventually reaching Kardashian and seemingly leaving her offended. He shared with E! News,

“It’s surprising to me that it has become remotely a story,–I don’t know Ms. Kardashian, I know her public persona. … What I said was meant to be more on pervasiveness of something in our culture, not personal, but she took offense to it and that is her right.”

He made it clear that his comment wasn’t intended to be personal, despite how the media portrayed it. Instead, it was meant as a commentary on the media landscape back then, a stance he firmly stood by.

Kim Kardashian’s Response to Jon Hamm’s Comment

The famous pop culture icon and the star of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian took to Twitter (now known as X) (via The Washington Post ) to share her thoughts on the matter immediately after Jon Hamm made the comment. She stated,

“I just heard about the comment Jon Hamm made about me in an interview. I respect Jon and I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that not everyone takes the same path in life. We’re all working hard and we all have to respect one another. Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, ‘stupid,’ is in my opinion careless.”

She emphasized the importance of treating one another with respect and kindness. Acknowledging that they all serve as entertainment providers to the masses and possess their own dedicated fan bases, she urged people not to diminish her accomplishments.

Instead, she encouraged applause for her unwavering conviction and years of hard work that contributed to building her empire. Kardashian has since become a business mogul, maintaining her status as one of the most widely followed celebrities globally.
