Denis Villeneuve, like a handful of other filmmakers, has been busy reshaping the entire cinematic landscape with his incredible talent. From his Hollywood debut with the acclaimed Prisoners to his current expected-to-be-a-blockbuster Dune: Part Two, the Canadian-French filmmaker’s projects are a true treat for the audience.
Despite impressive early reviews for Dune: Part Two the director has already decided to leave the franchise after a potential third movie. Seeing the incredible success that is shortly on its way for the director and the movie, there have been calls for the director to maybe helm the Star Wars franchise after he himself showed an interest in doing so. Yet many of his fans are outraged and claim it would be a disgrace for a director of his stature to direct a failing franchise like Star Wars.
Denis Villeneuve To Direct A Star Wars Movie?
Dune: Part Two has a stellar cast, is backed by one of the most impressive book series of all time, and has an impressive story that is too good to just remain in print. Yet it has been the vision and talent of Denis Villeneuve that has made the movie what it is potentially going to be, a blockbuster.
A simple Google search will prove how much of incredible reviews the movie has been receiving already and is even being revered as one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Yet the director seems to be inclined to leave the franchise after a potential third movie (via Time).
And so there have been calls for Villeneuve to possibly head over to the Star Wars franchise (see Reddit) since he is a massive fan and was inspired by the franchise while making his Dune movies (see The Playlist).
Even though the director once showed his interest in doing so while on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, fans have not been happy. The reason being the incredible downgrade that the billion-dollar grossing franchise has suffered ever since its inception, a fact that even he acknowledged during his interview with The Playlist.
Fans Do No Want Denis Villeneuve To Direct A Star Wars Movie
Denis Villeneuve once stated that his Dune movie is Star Wars for adults (via Fandom), so to have him on board the franchise hoping to make it return to its former glory does not seem like a bad idea. Even though Christopher Nolan compared his Dune: Part Two with the likes of The Empires Strike Back (via X), fans do not want the director to helm what is being widely hailed as a dying franchise (see CBR).
Many fans have since the past few years found the once glorious franchise to have diminished in quality ever since Dinsey took ownership. Not only has it been Marvel-ified, by making it confined to mass appeal instead of making bold decisions, but the originality of the franchise has long been dead (see Reddit).
And so this is how fans reacted once certain netizens claimed that Denis Villeneuve should direct a Star Wars movie.
after having a meal made by the magnificent Gordon Ramsay it’s clear… He has to manage a McDonalds. https://t.co/N5osv9ugYm

Ahh, yes, because after making the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer yearned to make a firecracker.

Why? He already directed something better.

Why would he take a step down? Lmao.
Just like Nolan with Bond, yea the style definitely fits but they never went there for a reason, studios won’t give complete creative control and that’s not gonna bide well by two of the best filmmaker’s of our time.— Ash Cohle (@ashcohle) February 26, 2024
Working a Star Wars movie after the Dune series would be such a downgrade 😂

Exclaiming that it would be the biggest downgrade to have the director helm a failing franchise after captaining what is being hailed as one of the top sci-fi movies of all time, fans want the director to steer away from the mythos.
While fans are just fans and their opinions are just opinions, only time will tell what Denis Villeneuve will do next.
Meanwhile Dune: Part Two will be in theatres on March 1, 2024.
