Suicide Squad Isekai’s lovely beginning may have been an act of sheer luck. The first three episodes were strong, funny, and interactive. It was a joy. Watching them felt almost as if one would want to sit back and relax when the latest episodes came about. However, as the story progressed, that case seemed to unfortunately and drastically decline.
The fourth episode was slow and felt so much more unnecessary than one would like to admit. In a similar way, the fifth had a smaller goal and an even more peculiar way to secure it. The big bad that had been looming over them gets wrapped up even before the opening song gets to play.
Suicide Squad Isekai is Abandoning the Thing that Made it So Good
Suicide Squad Isekai, when it first premiered, gathered hype and praise from fans both loyal to the anime fandom and the DC franchise. The concept was fresh and interesting, its execution even more so. The show felt fun, the character interactions were amusing and could bring a smile to the audience’s face. Now, however, it is lacking is departments more than one. The animation seems lackluster, taking away from the spectacle the first one was.
The fifth and latest episode is underwhelming, to say the least. The very start of the episode deals with an issue that has been plaguing the squad from the very beginning, the bombs’ timer. It is dealt with even before the opening credits can roll and suddenly the problem arises of there being a lack of ammunition. For an Isekai world where modern weapons such as guns are heavily being used, it stands as a real problem with no solution.
One of the highlights of this series had been the character interactions and that might be the only thing carrying it so far. The plot seems too thin and even the characters themselves don’t seem to care about it so much. It is given lesser importance than anything else.
The Immeasurable References
The rights to the series are owned by Warner Bros, a studio that already has access to some of the biggest shows and movies. That is a fact reminded to fans again and again as the references don’t seem to stop. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does seem more of an obvious marketing stunt than anything else. Their methods of fighting become more of an ‘as seen on TV’ rather than their own.
This is where another interesting part ties in, the dragon. In need of ammo, Rick Flag confirms that the helicopter he came in is still in good condition and can be accessed, however, it stands atop a mountain. As they take on the journey, the team discovers that the helicopter has become a home for a dragon, one that Harley initially mistakes for a bird.
The problem arises when Deadshot finds himself useless without his bullets. Against a dragon, they aren’t much of any help with Harley, Peacemaker, and Deadshot being heavily reliant on the guns. Clayface does his best to use his powers but gets bested nonetheless.
The Dragon’s Nest
As they continue to fight, Harley, who has been obsessed with using a pan as an alternate weapon as her gun becomes useless, takes up the task of fighting the dragon by herself. Her bat seems to have been long forgotten and while she successfully handles it for some time, that is only a joy short-lived. Peacemaker and Rick Flag go atop the mountain and get the weapons, finding a bazooka for Deadshot to use.
Peacemaker then picks up a dragon egg from the nest and uses it as a hostage against the dragon. With one successful shot, the dragon falls to her death. Harley then takes the baby dragon under her wing, becoming some sort of a mother figure to it. They all get their ammo and Flag a walkie-talkie to communicate with Amanda Waller again, which he keeps from the team.
As they make their way back to the kingdom, things finally get set in place for the actual story to begin. The entire kingdom seems to be up in flames, with chaos and havoc everywhere. Finally, the most anticipated characters come into play, the Thinker and Enchantress.
