Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first mainline entry in the franchise after Super Mario Odyssey was released in 2017. The reviews of the game came out recently as the game is set to launch on October 20 and they are rather good. Its gameplay dynamics and the elements taken from classic games Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 make it a total package.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, players again face off against Bowser and Co. who has turned himself into a castle and the amazing fun concepts coupled with several types of levels seem to deliver an incredible gaming experience. The game has been getting loads of overwhelmingly positive reviews.

VGC’s Andy Robinson termed the game as Mario’s “most memorable 2D outing since the 1990s” while Eurogamer also seems to have loved the concept of the game and coined it as an “endless cascade of ideas.”

The game currently has a Metascore of 93 and has been praised for its immersive world and dynamic gameplay.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is off to a great start but not everything is perfect and some still think the game lacks on some fronts such as music and game levels. IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey stated:

Despite the joy radiating from most of the 2D Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s not quite up to par with the last mainline 3D Mario masterpiece, Super Mario Odyssey. The music, while not at all bad, is surprisingly forgettable this time around.

And while there are some five-star difficulty stages – including an entire group of them I won’t spoil here – Wonder is a bit light on the challenge side of things, so there’s not as much here for seasoned series veterans as its predecessor has.

Screen Rant’s Lara Jackson also noticed this about the game and said that while the side-scrolling game could be the plumber’s most magical adventure, it is a bit easier than the previous game.

VG247’s Alex Donaldson said that the game could be the best entry in the series since Super Mario World and Wonder is the “perfect first game to launch a new era of Mario games with his new-found elevation to movie star status.”

Daily Mirror kept the game’s description quite easy to understand, applauding the gameplay changes, visuals, and animation, and coined it as the “best 2D Mario since the SNES era, and a strong contender for the best one yet.” GamesRadar+’s Sam Loveridge praised the game’s fun and humorous side and its immersive world. Loveridge stated:

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is an excellent 2D Mario game with easily the most impressive world-building we’ve seen in this style. The trilogy of new power-ups is brilliant fun, and regularly humorous, with Nintendo’s finishing touches adding extra personality at every turn.

It is important to note that currently there are no negative reviews for Super Mario Bros. Wonder and 8 out of 10 is the lowest score on Metacritic. Although, it solely depends on individual user reviews of how the game fares when it officially launches on Friday, the twists and turns in the plumber’s journey have captivated the players so far and the only issues that are seen are the soundtracks and the easier levels.
