Instead, the team is going to be focusing on newer games and will probably go back to its old franchises like Divinity: Original Sin.

This comment from 9 years ago shows Vincke proclaiming his love for the Dragon Commander franchise. Back then, he had to shelve any plans for a sequel to the franchise due to the Kickstarter campaign for Divinity: Original Sin 2.

After that, the studio released Baldur’s Gate 3 to widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike. Even a Skyrim developer admitted that Baldur’s Gate 3 is superior. But, now that Vincke has reiterated that he is not up for making a sequel or DLC for the game anytime soon, fans of the Dragon Commander franchise have started hoping for a sequel.

The game was the fourth installment in the Divinity series, which has been dormant for quite some time as the studio worked on bringing Baldur’s Gate 3 to life for the past 6 years. But now, with the game completely released, Larian Studios can finally focus on its original IP, Divinity.

Meanwhile, Vincke has also spoken out about the state of the gaming industry.

There is no clear-cut news or update from Larian Studios regarding its future project. But why is Larian not making a sequel to Baldur’s Gate? In an interview at the GDC, Vincke cleared up the matter, saying,

That’s not what we were made for. That’s literally the opposite of what Larian is about. We want to do big, new things. We don’t want to rehash the thing that we’ve done already.

This sentiment will echo with most gamers, as they are tired of big studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard releasing similar games with rehashed mechanics, making the gaming experience boring.

Vincke has said that the next game that he is planning will be so huge that Baldur’s Gate 3 will feel tiny in comparison.

Swen and his team at Larian seem pretty confident that they will be able to deliver on their promise.

What do you think Larian Studios should do now? Do you think Vincke was right to pass over a sequel to Baldur’s Gate? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I travel. I game. I write. In no strict order.

The single biggest lie told all around is, "It isn't that simple." It is simple, everything is. And that is what I emulate in my writing. No unnecessary jargons and no flamboyant flourish. Just what's needed to get your imagination going. After all mind has no limit, unlike the written word.
