Sydney Sweeney’s horror film Immaculate follows the story of a nun who gets impregnated and is considered to be akin to the Virgin Mary. The body horror film examines the control the world seeks over a woman’s body and director Michael Mohan reportedly was inspired by Rosemary’s Baby and his own experiences with catholicism.

Sweeney mentioned that though screenwriter Andrew Lobel’s script was amazing, she and the director decided to change the ending to be a more harrowing and dark scene that sees the character experience utmost pain, all captured in a long take. Mohan reportedly pitched the scene to Sweeney knowing that she would be up for it and said that he wanted to make an unforgettable horror film.

Sydney Sweeney mentioned that she had to tap into all the anger she had faced to perform in the final scene. The actress’ n*de scenes on Euphoria and other shows and films have always made it to headlines and she has faced considerable criticism for the same. After her recent hosting gig on Saturday Night Live cropped pictures of the star were reportedly masqueraded as private pictures and were a trend.

Sweeney had faced similar incidents when she starred in Euphoria, where she had many n*de scenes. According to GQ, the actress’ stills from the show were shared on social media, with her cousins being tagged on the videos, making her feel violated. Sweeney then reportedly used this feeling to bring out her harrowing and painful performance in the final scene of Immaculate. She said to GQ,

“There’s so many raw, guttural moments that I felt as Cecilia, and the pain and the agony and the fear and the sadness that she was going through…It’s the biggest, most animalistic scream and it’s from a real life situation. I think that is what speaks volumes. Yes, you can have a horror film where things are gory and jump out at you, but one of the things that’s the scariest in Immaculate is real life.”

The actress’ performance has been received positively by critics and the film is set to be released on March 22.
