Anyone who owns a PlayStation 5 is familiar with Astro’s Playroom which comes pre-loaded with the console and serves as a tech demo for DualSense Controller and promotes the PlayStation brand. Astro’s Playroom is the sequel to Astro Bot Rescue Mission which was developed for PS4’s VR headset.
When players reach the last zone of Astro’s Playroom which is located at the underside of the CPU Plaza, they encounter the T-Rex who is the final boss and the oldest enemy in the game. However, many might not be aware of the fact that the T-Rex is not just a random dinosaur but it has an amazing history with PlayStation.
T-Rex Boss in PlayStation Game Astro’s Playroom
Astro’s Playroom is a single-player 3D platformer game where players play as Astro Bot. In the game, the T-Rex boss tries to eat everything that’s in front of it and is hell-bent on destroying Astro Bot. The T-Rex keeps itself hidden and only roars from time to time after players unlock the four PS artifacts. As much fun players have while fighting and defeating the T-Rex, most of them are not aware of its significance to the platform.
A Reddit user u/xXDark-GamingXx asked about the significance of the T-Rex boss for the platform on the r/playstation subreddit and many other users joined in the quest to find out. The T-Rex was the first made available in demo 1 to show the power of the original PlayStation hardware in 1995.
This demo showcased the hardware’s graphical capabilities and how the PS1 rendered the characters. The addition of the T-Rex in Astro’s Playroom was an impeccable choice to celebrate the roots of the PlayStation. The demo video is available on YouTube and shows the T-Rex roaming around in 3D.

There are other references to PlayStation and the history of Sony in Astro’s Playroom with the bots being dressed as the PS characters and it takes people on a nostalgia trip who first got the original hardware. The T-Rex was also included in one of the demo discs for PS1 with launch day purchases.
There was also a stingray on demo discs for PS1. The players on PS1 would move the T-Rex in the dark space and as it was just a tech demo, there was no background but it had music. Players could zoom into the T-Rex and Stingray that swam around in the water. Both the T-Rex and Stingray were 3D models and helped players figure out the use of the controller.
