The Star Wars franchise has been the torch-bearer of Hollywood’s fantasy genre. First created by George Lucas in 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope was an immediate success. Its influence could be felt in several spheres, from comics, to video games. Sequels and TV shows were inspired by the Star Wars franchise. Previously owned by Lucasfilm, Disney bought the rights to the classic sci-fi franchise in 2012.
The original trilogy featured its last film in 1983, Return of the Jedi. Since then, several directors have tried their hand at appropriate sequels. After Disney acquired the rights, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in 2015. Now, in 2023, news of the Star Wars return has left fans with a mix of reactions.
Star Wars is Back
A Twitter post by IGN declared that director Taika Waititi will be recreating the Star Wars franchise, almost a decade later of the franchise’s last release. Moreover, the director wants his film to resemble and capture the essence of the original Star Wars trilogy. However, the 48-year-old director does not want to rush the epic sequel. Hence, Waititi might focus on it only after four of his other projects are finished. Well, seems a bit of a stretch.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Waititi said,
“At the moment I’m still developing something with them. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they’re gonna push it until I finish these other projects. I’ve got about four other scripts that I’m trying to finish. My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”
The Thor Ragnarok creator is currently engrossed in a movie inspired by Kazuo Ishiguru’s Klara and the Sun. Waititi is prioritizing the release of this movie and shall be preoccupied with his other projects for the next six or seven years, per IGN. He also noted that another Thor film is also not on the list as of now. Regardless, the news of a new Star Wars feature derived much applause and humor from the fans.

I'd actually watch a Starwars film if it was as goofy as this post. At least I would walk in and know exactly what I was getting into.

It's funny as a social media post, but insufferable as a movie scene.

I want this guy to write the next Star Wars. The turning off/on lightsabers trilogy is hilarious.

The Star Wars trilogy was undoubtedly, one of the greatest movie franchises in Hollywood. Initially distributed by 20th Century Fox, the franchise collected $460 million at the box office in the 1990s, per Finance Buzz. Taking the inflation until 2023 into consideration, it would amount to billions. Will Waititi be able to recreate the same kind of magic? Let’s see what happens.
