It might have been Takashi Yamazaki’s lucky day when he was hired to create what has now become an absolute cinematic wonder, Godzilla Minus One. In the entire cinematic history of bringing the various iterations of Godzilla and similar characters on-screen, the Japanese Kaiju flick stands as the champion among them despite having a measly, humble budget of $10-12 million.
Not only has Yamazaki’s epic been an incredible commercial success, but it has also been an amazing box office success, so much so that it went on to gross over 9 times its budget. Given its massive success, the filmmaker wants to make a sequel. However, it would be one similar to what Godzilla vs. Kong achieved an epic Kaiju vs. Kaiju showdown.
Takashi Yamazaki Wants to Bring a Kaiju vs. Kaiju Battle On-Screen Next
Godzilla Minus One is an Oscar-nominated epic now. With a team of 35 artists, a $10-12 production budget, and the brains of Takashi Yamazaki alone (via AV Club), the movie has become the best Godzilla flick ever made as per numerous fans and critics (see Reddit and Rotten Tomatoes).
From exploring the human side of the tale to connecting it with the immediate danger posed by the presence of a Kaiju, the movie does everything so brilliantly that it is difficult to even find a fault. Grossing over $107 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), even though it has only been released in a handful of Western countries and Japan, there is plenty left to explore in the Kaiju tale.
In a recent interview with Empire, the filmmaker Yamazaki revealed he hopes to explore what only Godzilla vs. Kong has managed to spectacularly explore, an extraordinary Kaiju vs. Kaiju battle.
“I don’t know that anyone has pulled off a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama, and that challenge is something that I’d like to explore.”
The 2021 movie, Godzilla vs. Kong was a major draw for fans of both creatures and allowed for a more dynamic and visually stunning battle between the two. And to have Yamazaki create a sequel on a Kaiju vs. Kaiju battle is a guaranteed success for sure!
What Will Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One Sequel Based On?
At the end of Godzilla Minus One, the invincible creature is perceived to be dead yet his fleshy remains in the ocean seem to have some life left, and Noriko is left with a bizarre mark on her neck. This end makes plenty to be explored in the sequel apart from possibly featuring an epic battle between two monsters.
In his interview with Empire, Takashi Yamazaki revealed that while there are no plans for a sequel yet, he would very much like to explore what happens in the future for the characters.
“I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it’s the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them.”
Yet while possibly featuring a Kaiju battle, the filmmaker has no plans to overlook the human elements of the story if he ever makes a sequel.
“When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component. [I would want to] to make sure that the human drama and whatever’s happening between [the] kaiju both have meaning, and both are able to affect one another in terms of plot development.”
While these are all talks and plans, fans of the tale are excited and believe wholeheartedly that the director (if he ever makes a sequel) would ace it again (see X)!
