It all makes sense why Taylor Swift has turned out to be one of the most prolific wordsmiths of the 21st century as poetry seems to reside in her blood. Since embarking on her vocal journey two decades back, the Grammy Winner has cemented herself as one of the most successful pop stars of the modern era, and things aren’t looking to slow down anytime soon.
And following her lyrical chops, it comes as no surprise that the pop queen is linked to one of the most important figures in American literature, Emily Dickinson.
Taylor Swift Is the Late Emily Dickinson’s Cousin
While the legendary Emily Dickinson enjoyed little success during her lifetime, she went on to become one of the greatest figures in American poetry after her death. And per Genealogy company Ancestry, Dickinson is linked to the Shake it Off singer, as they are sixth cousins, three removed, which does explain the pop star’s poetic chops in her songs. The report read (via Today),
“Swift and Dickinson both descend from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut). Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line.”
The Cruel Summer singer has previously made remarks about Emily Dickinson while addressing how she writes her lyrics, stating,
“If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre,”
And with her upcoming album, titled The Tortured Poets Department, set for a release on 19th April, fans can expect Swift to drop some more poetic geniuses.
Taylor Swift’s Stardom Is Likely to Boost Singapore’s Economy
Although it took the World a while to recognize the talent of Emily Dickinson, sadly, the iconic poet didn’t enjoy the acclaimed stature in her lifetime. But fortunately, this isn’t the case with Taylor Swift. With Singapore being the only Southeast Asia stop of her Era‘s tour, which hasn’t sat well with its neighboring countries, Swift’s stardom is said to boost Singapore’s economy. Reflecting on Taylor Swift, who will be performing six shows from March 2 to 9, Singapore’s culture ministry and tourism board stated (via Business Insider):
“It is likely to generate significant benefits to the Singapore economy, especially to tourism activities such as hospitality, retail, travel, and dining, as has happened in other cities in which Taylor Swift has performed,”
It’s reasonable to say just like Dickinson’s work, Taylor Swift’s music will outlive us all and will be cherished by generations to come.
