Although modern audiences know Richard Grant for his guest spot in Marvel Studios’ Loki, the actor is generally known for his career-defining debut in Withnail and I (1987). However, having more than three decades of tie-up and experience in the entertainment industry, Grant claimed to be tired of the snubs within the celebrity world.
During his interview with The Guardian, the actor reflected upon the balance in his life’s happiness and grief. That’s when Richard Grant recalled his colleague, Nicole Kidman, and pointed out how her change in behavior following his Oscar nod, made him detest the celebrity culture even more.
Richard Grant Recalled His Oscar Nomination
Prior to the release of his mémoire – A Pocketful of Happiness, which deals with celebrity gossip surrounding him and his wife, Richard Grant sat for an interview with The Guardian. Reminiscing about the time he had with his late wife, the actor reflected upon how the entertainment industry treated both of them differently.
While discussing the heartbreaking disparity of Hollywood that affected his wife Joan Washington, Richard Grant reflected upon his Oscar nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Stating how initially his film debut changed his career trajectory, Grant confessed even the Oscar nod made him realize a lot about the entertainment industry.
Appearing in the 2018 comedy-drama, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Grant played the role of Jack Hock, who helped his friend Lee Israel to revitalize her failing writing career. While the movie turned out to play a major role in his career and led him to earn an Academy Award nomination, it also helped him speak openly about stories that celebrities usually keep to themselves.
Richard Grant Slyly Bashed Nicole Kidman
Speaking with The Guardian, Richard Grant reflected upon his Oscar nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and mentioned how it changed people’s behavior around him. Although he was previously ignored by a few of his colleagues, Grant mentioned how one nomination changed everyone around him.
Pointing blatantly at one particular actress, Richard Grant slammed her the most during his interview. Well, it’s none other than Nicole Kidman. The Loki actor slyly criticized Kidman for showing her true colors. Stating how the actress’s attitude completely changed after his Oscar nomination, Grant claimed Kidman even became his best friend.
“She swans elegantly towards me, saying: ‘I hope you win every award coming your way, cos you’re heartbreaking and brilliant.’ No denying the sea change from her polite greeting at Telluride [film festival] eight weeks ago, before she’d seen the movie. Feels like being given temporary membership of the elite Fame Club.”
Being completely honest about his opinions on celebrity culture, Richard Grant later admitted that he never faced any repercussions because of Elizabeth Taylor’s aphorism.
“I didn’t mean it as a criticism exactly – more an observation. You know Elizabeth Taylor’s aphorism: ‘There’s no deodorant like success.’…Interpret it as you will.” he added.
Without holding back his opinion, Grant later slammed the entire industry for its strange culture.
