Richard Grant found the spotlight once again when he starred in the role of Classic Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2021 series, Loki. But before that, the actor had already starred in some other iconic movies and series.
That doesn’t mean that Richard Grant hasn’t found himself in some controversies throughout his Hollywood years. Grant was quoted by the Sunday Times as saying that straight actors shouldn’t take on gay roles after portraying a gay role himself in the 2018 film Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Richard Grant Stated Straight Actors Shouldn’t Take Gay Roles!
Back in 2018, the MCU actor starred in the role of Jack Hock in a film titled Can You Ever Forgive Me? Following the release of the film, Grant was famously quoted by the Sunday Times that according to him, straight actors shouldn’t take on gay roles in movies and series.
In an interview with The Guardian when Grant talked about his upcoming film, the talk of Richard Grant’s controversy came into discussion. Stating that the statement was considered out of context to frame the actor, Grant went back on his word and stated that he was only targeting a particular actor, Darren Criss.
“I’m glad you brought that up. I said I think that you have to be very sensitive and aware that you are taking a role away from somebody, and you have to really justify why you are doing that but, of course, it was quoted and misquoted subsequently that only gay actors should play gay roles, which is not what I actually said. This is the way of the world … I then got trolled on the internet.”
Whether the actor meant it in a respectful manner or not, people took to their social media handles to troll the actor for his comments. Richard Grant, however, shut them up when he revealed that he too had to step out of his comfort zone to choose theater over a sports and heavy-drinking culture.

After his comments on the controversial topic, Grant stated in his interview with The Guardian that he too had to step out of his comfort zone when he wanted to join theater arts. Stating that he grew up in a sports-influenced and heavy-drinking culture, Richard Grant revealed that his father was an alcoholic.
“It was unfettered wide-eyed-in-Babylon delight, I think because of where I grew up and the circumstances in which I grew up, the [fact that the] good fortune that has come my way has happened in the twilight zone of my life career-wise is so beyond anything that I could have imagined that I can’t help but feel celebratory about it.”
He further continued,
“So it’s undiluted delight – and that pisses some people off because they think it can’t be genuine. I’m not a good enough actor to do that.”
In the end, it seems that the actor is out of his controversy as he was last seen in the 2023 movie titled Saltburn. He is also attached to 6 other upcoming projects in various stages of development but unfortunately, he is out of MCU’s Loki.
