Shia LaBeouf Gave Insight On How Will Smith Impacted Suicide Squad’s Script

Shia LaBeouf was first in line to try out for Lieutenant GQ Edwards in Suicide Squad. The film had grabbed his attention and his friendship with David Ayer made it even more possible. “Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up.”

Before Will Smith came on board, Tom Hardy was set to play Colonel Rick Flag. However, after the actor got involved, they had to replace him and the reason was purely the Men in Black actor. As the studios had got Smith, they wanted to increase the significance of his role. To do so, Hardy’s role’s impact was decreased. Hardy was later replaced by Joel Kinnaman. After James Gunn took over the DC Universe, there was speculation about an Ayer Cut being released for Suicide Squad as well.

“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

No matter how much he wanted the role, he could not get the part because WBD was not willing to hire him. Moreover, they would rather hire someone else than him, choosing not to invest in LeBeouf.
