Glen Powell Felt Incredulous After Tom Cruise’s Near-Death Experience

Since Cruise believes in performing his own stunts, the actor and the cast sat in the passenger seats of real Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets. During the production of the film, Glen Powell was surprised to see Cruise smiling after a mechanical failure that could have been fatal mid-air!

Talking about the scene, Powell revealed to Men’s Health that he was left speechless when Cruise’s plane suffered a mechanical failure while airborne. This failure could have been the death of the pilot and Tom Cruise but when they landed safely, Cruise had no fear but was simply smiling from the experience!

“There will never be another Tom Cruise. He and the pilot landed the plane with a wire. He smiled, got out of the plane. I was like, That guy almost died, and he’s smiling.”

Having the time of his life while working with Cruise and the rest of the cast, Glen Powell received some incredible advice from the veteran actor for the ending of the film.

With how Powell’s ‘Hangman’ swoops in to save the day at the end of Top Gun: Maverick, the actor had a special role to play. As per Glen Powell, Tom Cruise took him aside and gave him some advice on how to make the ending actually work (via Variety’s Actors on Actors).

“But Tom gave me this advice: ‘For the ending to work, you have to completely lean into that. Everybody else in the movie is questioning their own ability. You’re the only guy that’s not questioning it. So if there’s any sort of apology in anything you say, the movie doesn’t work.”

Well, Powell did lean into his character completely as the ending was quite unexcepted for Top Gun: Maverick. With Cruise and Miles Teller in the lead roles, the movie received a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDB and a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 2022 film is available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S.
