Some Hollywood stars not only leave a lasting impact on their audience with their performance but also sometimes deceive them with a perfect accent. The 27-year-old English actress Florence Pugh has also done the same with her several on-screen characters, with her ability to convincingly portray characters with different accents.
Many have been caught off guard by her British accent and learning that she actually is a UK native. The Oppenheimer star addressed the subject of discussion during a conversation with Ed Gamble and James Acaster during an appearance on Off Menu Podcast.
Florence Pugh Talks About Her English Accent
Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. has opened up about the time he was roasted by Kate Winslet, who stated that his accent was “the worst British accent [she’s] ever heard.” Florence Pugh has also had a similar experience throughout her career, as her accent has often been a topic of discussion among people.
While some are simply impressed with how good she is at adjusting her accent as per her role, others have simply called her out for putting on a fake British accent. During her appearance on the Off Menu podcast, she opened up about the same. She shared how so many people call her out for having a fake English accent, believing that she is actually American.
“So many people think I’m American. Then when I do things publicly, like if I present an award or I’m on a stage talking, they’re like, ‘That is the fakest English accent I have ever heard.”
The Little Women actress was born in Oxford, UK, and shared that she talks in the English accent off camera. However, she had to note every time that she was not putting on any fake accent. “I’m like, no, that is me. That’s literally me. So sorry,” she further stated during the podcast.
Florence Pugh Loves Doing Accents
People might call her out for having a fake English accent, but the ability to opt for the accents for her on-screen characters is a testament to Florence Pugh’s talent. And it’s something she loves to do. During an interview with POPSUGAR, the actress shared, “I really love accents. I love doing accents.”
She also shared that as she delves into her character, it’s not even that hard for her to do the accent. However, it gets complicated when she has to do the same around her friends and family. Pugh shared that she “always screw[s] it up” while telling a quick joke during a dinner.
She shared that she has always been good at doing accents as, growing up, she would often copy her grandad’s accent. “Well, I can do northern quite easily. My gran is from Grimsby. So I grew up taking the piss out of my grandad,” she shared on the Off Menu Podcast.
