When Quentin Tarantino makes a film, critics and audiences sit up and take notice. The quirky genius has carved a niche for himself with his unique brand of writing and storytelling that has won him a lot of acclaim. With his seamless blending of genres coupled with the ability to incorporate heavy dialogue with stylized entertainment, Tarantino has proved that there is no one like him in the industry.
Since his 2019 film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, fans have been eagerly awaiting the director’s next venture namely The Movie Critic, which he stated would be his 10th and final film. Unfortunately, it has now been confirmed that the project has been officially shelved. But seeing the certain possibilities that Tarantino had for the narrative, disappointed fans believe that this possibility may not have worked.
Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic Has Officially Been Canceled
A Quentin Tarantino film has the reputation of gaining a lot of hype even before it enters production. This was the case for The Movie Critic, which was supposed to be the maverick filmmaker’s 10th and final film before he would officially hang up his boots.
While not much was known about the story, information pointed to the film focusing on a real-life movie critic who rose up the ranks by beginning his writing career with a gig in a p**nographic magazine. Superstar Brad Pitt who won an Oscar for Tarantino’s film Once upon a Time… in Hollywood, was reportedly cast for the lead role.
Even as eager fans were keeping tabs on further news, there has now been a shocking revelation (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the project has been shelved and will not get made. With the Django Unchained filmmaker yet to officially give a statement about this decision, the reasons behind the film failing to take off is still to be known.
In trying to make guesses about what might have transpired for Tarantino to let the script go, the article looks back at a telling quote that the filmmaker made in 2016 which might be an indicator about his mindset as a creative artist who has a deep understanding of cinema.
“I never try to take anything out too soon. If I do, I realize it, and I put it back. Not every film needs to be made. Not every movie should be made.”
This statement could have rung true for The Movie Critic with the Inglourious Basterds director feeling that the time and other factors were just not right to make the film.
Fans Were Doubtful About A Quentin Tarantino Metaverse Swansong
While Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic has been canceled much to everyone’s disappointment, there are some intriguing speculations about the narrative that are splitting fans down the center. Apart from the film supposedly focusing on a real-life movie critic, an article in The Hollywood Reporter elaborates on another massive mainstream idea that Tarantino was toying with.
This possibility included creating his own cinematic universe where all his iconic characters from previous films would enter this world, much like an Avengers ensemble. This metaverse theme was also reported to have actors like John Travolta and Jamie Foxx being part of Tarantino’s farewell, while some of the director’s favorites were also rumored to have entered the narrative as a version of themselves.
As it turned out, this is just a pipe dream now. But disappointed fans who were looking forward to the film, are now wondering if the idea of a Tarantino Cinematic Universe would have been a good choice for the film. While some viewers were up for the story, others felt that the director’s aesthetic did not fit in with this possibility.
That would’ve been a perfect send-off on paper. However, this kinda sounds like Disney’s Wish movie and look how that turned out.

Despite some criticisms regarding the metaverse speculations, a lot of Tarantino fans are still hanging on to a sliver of hope that the director may someday make The Movie Critic. However, based on the current information, this possibility seems bleak.
