Uma Thurman Explains How Quentin Tarantino’s Filmmaking Style Has Evolved

The quartet also took part in a special screening of the film and answered several questions. During the event, Thurman jokingly stated that Pulp Fiction was the last time Tarantino worked with a set script before changing his filmmaking style to become more improvisational.

“I think it was probably the last film Quentin made that was on schedule, where he actually tried to make his days and make his weeks. I think after that, it’s been pretty improvisational for him.”

Thurman made the above statement (via IndieWire), implying that Tarantino’s success early on in his career has affected his later films in a major way.

Thurman later worked with Tarantino on both volumes of the martial arts drama Kill Bill, which by the director’s own admission was heavily improvised, especially when it came to its action scenes. Hence, it is safe to say there is some truth to Thurman’s comments, even if she was just joking.

During the same event, Thurman also discussed Quentin Tarantino‘s overall impact on cinema, particularly after the release of Pulp Fiction led to his ascension to becoming one of Hollywood’s best directors over the next few decades.

“It changed cinema. I feel like I’ve had an evolving and beautiful and growing relationship with Pulp Fiction throughout my life. It changed every filmmaker that I’ve met since.”

Thurman used the above words (via IndieWire) to praise Tarantino’s work on Pulp Fiction and his subsequent films. The film went on to gross over $213 million at the global box office and won Tarantino the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award.

More recently, Tarantino was reportedly working on his tenth and arguably final film, tentatively titled The Movie Critic. However, in April 2024, it was reported that Tarantino was no longer moving forward with the project and was reevaluating his options. Therefore, it remains to be seen what Tarantino chooses as his tenth feature film.
