Being in the entertainment industry for decades, Christopher Nolan has served his audiences with a myriad of acclaimed movies. While his films have often been appreciated for their brilliance, Nolan himself has a list of movies from different directors that impressed him thoroughly.
One of such films on Christopher Nolan’s list is Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, which was inspired by the cult-classic horror flick The Thing, starring Kurt Russell. Discussing the reasons behind his admiration for Tarantino’s film, Nolan spoke about the screening and the music used in the film.
Christopher Nolan is a Fan of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight
Quentin Tarantino has been one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood. His works have not only cemented his position in the industry but also served as an inspiration for many directors. Appreciating one of Tarantino’s acclaimed projects, renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan disclosed his favorite movie from the director.
As per Far Out Magazine, the Oppenheimer helmer was thoroughly impressed with Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western thriller The Hateful Eight. Although the intense, slow-burning movie was inspired by John Carpenter’s 1982 cult classic horror flick The Thing featuring Kurt Russell, Nolan found himself won over by Tarantino’s take on the project.
Well, it’s not entirely difficult to understand why a cinephile like Christopher Nolan was awestruck with Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight. Beyond the film’s narrative merits, since the movie presented an ode to the forgotten viewing experience on 70mm projectors, it stole Nolan’s breath away.
Christopher Nolan Discussed the Reasons Behind His Admiration
According to Far Out Magazine, Christopher Nolan eventually discussed the reason behind his appreciation for Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western thriller. Disclosing his admiration for the movie following a 70mm screening, Nolan noted that it was an incredible experience for him.
“Well, that’s a hell of a movie, isn’t it? What an incredible thing and an incredible way to bring back the atmosphere and the beauty of seeing a film in a theatre.”
“Watching this film, it felt like it had an increased level of formalism. There is a real calm and thought for where the camera is always. It’s also in the music. There is a great sense of the history of cinema in it.”
Appreciating Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight for its formalism and music, Nolan eventually praised the director for having a great sense of cinematic history. Further, the Dunkirk helmer expressed his preference for the movie’s digital projection.
“I love what Quentin Tarantino is doing with The Hateful Eight, putting 70mm projectors in cinemas in North America for the original run of his film.”
Unfortunately, although Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight earned Christopher Nolan’s praise, it failed to earn properly at the global box office. Made with an estimated budget of $44M, the movie managed to earn $156M worldwide.
