Arnold Schwarzenegger was heartbroken by the box office failure of Last Action Hero

Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up about the failure of his movie Last Action Hero in his latest documentary, titled Arnold. The actor was initially a professional bodybuilder and ventured into acting in the 1970s. His first movie was an epic fantasy-adventure Conan the Barbarian, which was received well by the audience. His multiple action movies made him one of the biggest action stars of the time.

Owing to his massive stardom, the actor was shocked when one of his movies failed at the box office. Schwarzenegger played the lead in the film, Last Action Hero, a meta action-comedy. It was directed by Die Hard fame John McTiernan and co-written by Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black. The film was supposed to be a massive success, however, it failed to garner the interest of the audience. The megastar was very upset and embarrassed by the failure of his film. The actor recalled a phone call by The Terminator director James Cameron to console him.

“I cannot tell you how upset that I was. It hurts you. It hurts your feelings. It’s embarrassing.”

Cameron said,

“He sounded like he was in bed crying. He took it as a deep blow to his brand. I think it really shook him. I said, ‘What are you gonna do?’ He said, ‘I’m just gonna hang out by myself.’ That’s the only time I’ve ever heard him down.”

Schwarzenegger added,

“I didn’t want to see anyone for a week. But you keep plodding along. And my mother-in-law also said this all the time: ‘Let’s just move forward.’ It’s a great message.”

The actor was disappointed for some days but then moved on to do other films.
