Director Matthew Vaughn recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about his latest movie, Argylle, and several other things. During the conversation, host Josh Horowitz asked him if he would ever do a Star Wars movie. The director replied,

“For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters that I loved, so, if they said to me we’ll reboot, do you want to reboot Star Wars? and actually have Luke Skywalker solo and Vader and you do your version of it – everyone would say you’re an idiot to try – but that would excite me.”

Since the release of 1977’s Star Wars, the Star Wars franchise has remained one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. The sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), further popularised the series around the world.

Fans got to know more about the Star Wars universe with the prequel and sequel trilogy, however, Vaughn believes that there’s a major flaw in the franchise now and how he would focus on it,

“Star Wars is the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong because they’ve forgot that – they’ve done brilliantly on the TV but it needs an epic new film and that’s what I would do.”

Director Rian Johnson’s 2017 movie The Last Jedi, served as the second installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy but many people, including actress Daisy Ridley, claimed that the film was very divisive.

It would be certainly exciting to see Matthew Vaughn’s take on the Star Wars franchise but for now, the director is very occupied. Even before the release of Argylle, the director confirmed that two sequels are in production. In the same interview, the director revealed his ideas of intertwining the Argylle movie series with his popular Kingsman franchise,

“We have an Argylle 2 planned so there is a universe – so we’ve got the kingsman on the right, I’d say, Argylle on the left and then we’ve got an idea for something in the middle as well – you’ve got these sort of competing franchises in a galaxy that one day might meet.”

In hindsight, expanding the franchise may seem like a bad idea to some people, particularly because of Argylle‘s early reviews. Although Vaughn tried to “reinvent” the genre, it didn’t sit well with some viewers, but the film was released on 2nd February 2024 so it still has more time to prove itself.
