As we are quickly approaching Halloween, it is the perfect time to count down some of the best horror games on Steam that can be played for free. There are plenty of horror games on Steam that players have been enjoying for years, but there are some that stand out from the rest and help to bring us new fears.
Below is a list of seven different free-to-play horror games on Steam that can be played currently and have already scared numerous players. Some of the games that are listed below are either still in development or could be completed, but regardless, they are some of the best free horror games on Steam at the moment.
Number 7: Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse
Think back to when you were a kid, and imagine you had a horrifying toy that scared you. Then imagine that toy coming alive and hunting you down in your own house. This is the story of Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse, as young girl Ruby has a new homemade toy from her grandma, which scares her.
One night, this toy comes alive, causing Ruby to explore her home to uncover the secrets as to why her toy is now alive and hunt her down. In this 2D side-scroller, Ruby has to hide from Mr. Hopp’s behind walls while also avoiding the toys on the floor that she left on the floor during the day.
We do not want to think about what happens when Ruby is caught by Mr. Hopp, but we can assume it will not be nice and will give us horrible nightmares.
Number 6: When The Darkness Comes
For many players, there are a lot of different horror tropes that can scare them, but one thing that can scare nearly anyone is being stuck within your own mind. When The Darkness Comes utilizes, the players fear of their own mind in unique ways as it explores concepts like depression and anxiety in rather interesting ways.
When it begins, it feels very similar to games like Superliminal, as it has some rather unique locations that start off rather simple, like asking the player to stand in certain locations or just doing simple actions.
As the game progresses, it slowly begins to bring in new concepts as it fills you with doubts regarding your decisions and actions, while also having some major set pieces that can be both horrifying and interesting to look at.
Number 5: The Devil Haunts Me
The Devil Haunts Me is a rather unusual game, as it is a top-down survival game that requires the player to explore the woods around their house while they gather resources to try and survive. This grows ever more challenging as there are horrors skulking around within these woods.
As the player begins to expand their search for resources to stay alive, they will begin to stumble on rather horrific scenes and mutilated corpses that will put a shiver up your spine. This leads many to fear leaving their home, as it makes the player feel like something is waiting out there for its chance to strike.
Number 4: High Entropy: Challenges
When it comes to horror, there is nothing scarier than a creature hunting the player down while they are attempting to solve puzzles. This is very evident in High Entropy: Challenges, which tasks the player with trying to escape numerous levels while being hunted by robots.
It must be said that the robots themselves aren’t overly scary and look rather goofy in some respects, but once they get a hold of you, it’s very scary. There is a choice for the player, as they can try to stealth through the game or they can find a weapon and try to fight back, but this is a challenge in its own right.
Number 3: The Backrooms Game FREE Edition
Whenever there is a list regarding horror games on Steam, there will always be one creepypasta-based game that makes its mark. Such as The Backrooms Game, which has the player be removed from reality and placed in an unknown space, surrounded by halls and rooms that seem to never end.
This may not sound very scary to start off with, but as the player begins to explore, they will begin to go slightly mad at the similar locations and never-ending scenery. There have even been reports that some players see a mysterious figure wandering the halls, which has many gamers wondering whether it is real or madness.
Number 2: Propagation VR
It may come as a big surprise, but horror games on Steam, or really on any platform, tend to be released in VR. This is quite a shock, as VR is an effective tool to immerse the player inside the horror story they are playing, essentially giving them a whole new view on the horror they experience.
This thought clearly passed through the minds of the developers behind Propagation VR, as they have used VR to create such a unique and horrifying experience that will scare pretty much everyone into nearly having a heart attack.
This new perspective helps the player gain a whole new view on their game as they can see the undead nightmares approach them and devour them where they stand, whilst also having to fight them off with their own hands.
Number 1: Poppy Playtime
Poppy Playtime is most likely both a child’s dream and nightmare rolled into one horror game. It takes place in an abandoned toy factory, but the horror is the toys that are there and what they want with the player character.
The main story of Poppy Playtime is about someone who used to work in the factory, comes back for something, but gets locked in. Once they are locked in, there are numerous toys that have come to life and are attempting to kill the main character.
Some of these toys look very harmless, like Huggy Wuggy, a 12-foot-tall fluffy creature who is all smiles and hugs until he decides to hug and eat you with his razor-sharp teeth. So far, there are only two chapters available at the moment, but more are on the way.
