Marvel is a beloved franchise, starting out in comic books and spreading across to movies. But there is another aspect of the Marvel franchise that is often overlooked, the games. Marvel has released many games over the years, some more memorable than others, but all with unique charm and enjoyment. Today I will talk about my favorite Marvel games of all time.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 (2011)

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, developed by Capcom, is widely regarded as one of the best Marvel games ever created. The game has become beloved since its release on 15 November 2011 with both competitive and casual fans alike. With a mix of beloved characters and engaging combat, the game has maintained a thriving competitive scene to this day.

One of the main reasons is due to how well-balanced the game is. The developers clearly took great care in making sure the roster isn’t too top-heavy, unlike Smash Ultimate. With accessible mechanics and jaw-dropping combos, there is a great balance between new player accessibility and high-level play. Watching skilled players duke it out in tournaments is a spectacle to behold.

In addition to its gameplay, Marvel vs Capcom 3 stands out for its stunning visuals and faithful representation of the characters in the game. With bright, eye-catching colors, the game is able to bring these beloved characters straight out of comic books and into players’ hands while staying faithful to their comic appearances. I have sunk many hours into this game, both playing and watching tournament games, and the captivating gameplay and hype moments are something very few fighting games can achieve.

Marvel’s Spiderman (2018)

Now I had to borrow a friend’s PS4 to play this one but Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 is an amazing game. This game is amazing, from the moment you put on that spidey suit and swing into the bustling city streets of New York, you know this game is going to be special. The attention to detail is amazing, from the intricate lighting to the bustling streets and the fluid swinging mechanics, this game makes you feel like a true superhero.

The game also has excellent combat, with a satisfying blend of acrobatic moves and web shots you really feel like these moves would do some damage. As you progress through the game you unlock more skills and gadgets, making the combat more strategic, but allowing customization for the intense boss fights that really test your reactions.

But it’s not just gameplay, as Marvel’s Spiderman provides a compelling story with memorable characters and events. Spiderman’s biggest draw to fans has always been his relatability, and that shines through in this game. With stunning visuals, great lighting, and raytracing, New York has never looked more alive in a videogame than when you are swinging from building to building.

Ghost Rider (2007)

Ghost Rider (2007) (Video Game)

Next is a pick many might not have played before, and that’s Ghost Rider 2007 for the PS2. Developed by Climax Group, the game allows players to step into the shoes of Jhony Blaze, once a stuntman, who was cursed with vengeance and transformed into the Ghost Rider.

Its unique blend of brutal melee attacks and demonic hellfire powers creates an intense and immersive gaming experience. Players can unleash a variety of special attacks such as acrobatic attacks and use their demonic chains to defeat enemies in this challenging hack and slash. The game also has a number of difficult bosses, and a compelling storyline allowing players to dive into the dark world of Ghost Rider.

With impressive graphics for the PS2, immersive gameplay, and a faithful adaptation of the comic book version of Ghost Rider, this game is a must-play for any fans of the comic book series, or Marvel fans who want a more action-packed adventure to get lost in.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006)

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Video Game 2006)

Next up is one I’m sure many people also enjoyed, and that’s Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. This highly acclaimed game was released in 2006 and allowed players to assemble their dream team of superheroes to embark together to save the world from imminent destruction.

What makes Marvel: Ultimate Alliance so good in my mind is the, at the time, a large roster of available characters. With over 20 heroes and villains to choose from, the game offers a wide range of replayability and different options to challenge levels. Each character has unique abilities, skills, and playstyles, so there is always a character for you.

The game also offered a collaborative multiplayer experience, allowing friends to team up to challenge levels together. I remember playing this game for hours with my brother, switching between characters and trying to get the highest score in levels.

With a fun story and engaging combat system, players are able to easily understand how to play, yet not get bored of the game for a long time, and the graphics still hold up today (though just barely).

The Incredible Hulk (2005)

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a game that is able to truly capture the essence of playing as the Hulk. Unlike previous Hulk games, this one removes any levels featuring Bruce Banner, choosing to solely focus on the Hulk, and as so it removes those slower-paced levels and allows players to fully embrace the destructiveness the Hulk provides.

The game offers a free-roam, destructible world, allowing players to roam around and break whatever they feel like when they aren’t so keen on following the story. Players are equipped with a wide variety of powerful attacks and moves, as well as allowing players to use the environment as a weapon. The game also provides quite the challenge, with various enemies and boss fights.

The game also has various side missions that allow players to purchase new abilities for The Hulk to wield. With a variety of options, one thing is for sure, wherever The Hulk goes, destruction will follow. So whether you are a fan of The Hulk or are just looking for an action-packed world full of destruction, this is certainly the game to keep you engaged for a long time.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes (2013)

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2013

Now what good videogame compilation list would this be without mentioning a Lego game? My personal favorite Marvel Lego game would have to be Lego Marvel Super Heroes. Combining the creativity and quirkyness of Lego games, with the action and exciting world of Marvel superheroes. This game allows players to take control of a wide range of their favorite superheroes, take down the baddies, and save the day.

The game offers a vast world, allowing players to explore many iconic Marvel locations, such as Stark Tower and the X-Mansion. The game also contains an engaging story, where you have to prevent Loki and his army from taking over the world, with gameplay that is fun for all ages.

One of the best aspects of Level Marvel Superheroes is the ability to switch between characters easily, using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and finish levels. The game also features a co-op mode, allowing you to team up with a friend to beat the villains and save the day (just no fighting over who gets to play Iron Man).

The game never takes itself too seriously, allowing it to be enjoyed by a wide range of players. From Marvel fans wanting to step into gaming, to dads wanting to engage with their kids, and everyone in between, this really is a game for all ages.

X-Men 2 Clone Wars (1995)

X-Men 2: Clone Wars. SEGA Genesis

X-Men has always been one of my favorite parts of the Marvel canon, that may partially be why I enjoyed X-Men 2 Clone Wars so much. This action-packed title allows players to play as their favorite characters and set out to save the world from the evil forces of Apocalypse. With an engaging storyline and difficult gameplay, this is a must-play for X-Men fans and Marvel fans alike.

The game features a wide range of playable characters, each with their own mutant powers, allowing each character to feel unique and providing a diverse experience for gamers. With a Co-Op multiplayer game mode, you can team up with other players to come together and challenge the game’s difficult stages together.

With simple yet smooth controls and intuitive combat mechanics, the game is easy to pick up and play by anyone, while the intense boss battles add that challenge that drives games and keeps players interested. The biggest challenge might be actually getting the game, given that it is a Sega Genesis game, but if you get your hands on it, you won’t be disappointed.
